Some good suggestions here – many of which bear repeating: Can we delete “sent messages?” Is there a protocol for posting to duplicate threads? (There are three distinct “Happy New Year” topics alone!) Can we search the forum? I DO applaud the site’s responsiveness to its members, from the elimination of the “thumbs” system to the addition of requested films and directors as profile options, and I look forward to future enhancements to a site that already feeds my addiction. I also applaud the Notebook correspondents, whose writing and knowledge (and access to films decidedly NOT coming soon to a theater near me) are enviable. Could you please change the name of the yearend writer’s poll, though? The graphic is crisp and the lists are impressive, but you really can’t have a “first annual” anything.
Hal Ashby should be an available option as an auteur to add to the profile.
It may be nice if you could see both your rating, and the average rating.
would be nice if you could delete a post that you created, and no one has responded to. had one of my posts get posted twice by accident, and couldn’t delete the duplicate.
There are two things that would increase the functionality of this site. First, create sub-categories for the forums. The current gigantic list of posts can be tough to sort through. Simple sections such as “Directors” and “Polls” would help greatly. Also, when it comes to which films are in the Auteur database, I think they should have to maintain at least a 3-star community average to be here. If after a certain period of time they can’t maintain it, they should be taken off. I also think that every film in the database should be available as a profile header, not just the pre-created ones. Just a few suggestions.
I just noticed that Raoul Ruiz’s name is spelled wrong under the Favorite Auteurs section of my profile. It’s probably my fault since I spelled his name wrong in the suggestion thread, color me embarrassed.
hello
I’m new to the site. I like the sober design please don’t change it.
I read most of the suggestions, the sub-categories in the forum are a great idea, I guess after all the comments there’s gonna be changes about it, I don’t know if it’s too late to give an opinion… Anyway, going through the forums I see there’s all kind of people, some, very few as far as I saw, are quite…sensitive… about some subjetcs, maybe a space in the forum for us the beginners, not only to the site but to movies in general… one thing is watching a lot films other is knowing cinema… a space where some basic topics can be discussed, without fear of… harsh responses…or just plain indifference… it will be great too just ask about anything related to movies, there’s a lot people in the forum who I found very generous with their comments, maybe we could post a simple question and I’m sure there will be very enlightening answers, with time we the begginers will find more confidence to post, those who don’t want to deal with that sort of thing will know what to avoid, those who like to share what they know would be happy to help… I know this is not a school…
but it would be nice if this place, and the people in it, spread out the love for movies and culture in general, for what I’ve seen here, that’s the idea, isn’t?
also I would like to ask if there will be a problem (I guess not) if anyone should start a thread in any other language… like spanish? I really don’t know how many people who speak spanish are in the site, or if any of them are not participating because of the language… it’s not just to speak in my own language, but to talk about things related to movies that people in usa or europe don’t really know much or are not interested in…
after all, this is not a place for english spoken movies, the library has a lot of variety in every aspect including language, so…
I appreciate any comments
gracias.
As I am the worse offender, could there be a way of correcting typos in forum new topic titles just after they are posted, as provided to us by the comments edit function? If not feasible, then could the auteurs staff occassionally skim (or just look for my forum topic posts!) the thread forum titles for obvious typos and correct – so that people like myself, that can’t see that well when posting a new topic, could correct those glaring errors that make us feel stupid after the fact? Thank goodness for the edit feature on comments, so I always proof-read after posting to catch some of those obvious ones in comments area. By the way, what’s the approximate time limit of the edit feature so I don’t go back too late?
I will be glad when we can search those forum topics so that multiple posters like me can easily find what we are looking for, without going through all those pages of forum topics. I hope your space limit has not been exceeded by my innumerable posts, but I will soon need counselling on how to shake the autuers obsession. Do you have a support group/crisis line for compulsive posters to go into rehab???
a little curious…any idea when the next set of features roll out.
Bob I think that you can only edit your last post.
My suggestion is to scrap the forum software you are using and go with one of the big players. I have a web site and me and a few others have a robust forum at no additional cost. So we have search ability, number of posts, number of times a thread has been read etc. etc.
No need to re-invent the wheel. Life is short.
For me, the way auteurs looks, reinventing wheel and adding features does not sound too bad at all. I have been in a bunch of forums and they all look the same, dull and drab.
Another thing I forgot to mention, and just saw on a different post to remind me, is that it seems tricky to choose the film option when opening a new forum topic and have it (the film title) appear with that forum topic. Others besides me have had this problem, with the film not showing up when you post the topic and then no way of getting it to appear after. Is this a glitch or are we doing something wrong? I am not sure how we are to use this feature when selecting a topic. Is it just to be used in the ‘Talent’ section?
I’m seeing a lot of “is THIS better than THAT” and “which NOMINEE will WIN” posts. Maybe a Poll section, where members can vote and reason their choice would work well. Make sure everyone gets only one chance to vote and justify their choice.
adding Masahiro Shinoda to the list of auteurs would be an improvement.
Also, a larger Library would be nice
can we get links to pages (with page numbers) at the top of the page too, makes browsing a lot more easier, it will save us from scrolling down each time we want to view next page.
2nding Andy’s suggestion and also throwing in that the forum really needs html or bbcode support.
Just thought I would revise this, as we have new posters here who may not have seen this thread. I don’t know what is in the pipeline re new developments on the Forum, but this is a good place to put suggestions and sometimes get feedback from our great auteurs staff. Any new comments out there? I have already posted a thead re the Forum organizing of threads, how good threads soon disappear, but would appreciate other opinions from our members on any topic relevant to the site.
I am not sure what the wall is for. Is it supposed to be a kind of a guestbook or is the user himself supposed to write on it? Or both? And why do that instead of sending a message to someone?
One more thing: The database of watchable films is growing, but there is no way to detect which films are new to watch in my country. I would like to have a column on the start page, or maybe a message to my account, everytime films are added, with the titles named. And only the ones I actually can watch. Otherwise I have to look through the whole database every other week or so.
Great site, by the way!
a few requests:
more films in the library (quite a few masterpieces and many of my faves missing) which i know you intend anyway
-please add Hiroshi Shimizu to auteurs (i’d like to add him to the list on my profile)
-could the forum boards be separated into different sections, e.g Films, National cinemas, Directors, Lists, non-film topics etc
-number of viewings, not just replies, to be indicated for threads
thanks!
there should be a way to favorite threads so its easy to return back to them. bonus points if we can favorite them and mark where were when we left off
Thank you all for keeping an eye on this thread and on a newer and improved version of The Auteurs. We have some exciting things in the pipeline so please keep the suggestions coming!
The friend invite mechanism isn’t available at present
Kenji, I think they just changed the naming to follow/unfollow, but it does the same thing.
er, so now i simply click on Follow as a friend invite?
yo amo a the auteurs!!!
Hi guys! A brand new change on The Auteurs which is a hint at larger things we have in store for movie lovers is a switch from our bi-directional friends system to a uni-directional following system. Read a bit more about the change here and let us know if you have any questions or comments!
I’d like some new navigational features for the forums. For instance, I wish that we could jump to a page number in a thread from the main list of threads page, and at the top of the first page on the thread, rather than always having to go into the thread, and then scrolling all the way to the bottom of the first page to get to the last page where you replied.
Also, a quote feature is much needed. and it would be super sweet if when you quote someone they are notified that someone is responding directly to their post.
Efe, I don’t understand what this new ‘following’ system is supposed to allow a person to do. Whats it for?
Filmy
I don’t know if my question fits in here, but I will ask anyway :)
- There is an old post and then there is a new post on the same topic (exact or similar), To reduce duplication, does it help if I reply to the new post with a reference/link to the old post to revive it instead of starting the same discussion all over again.
