Of your list, the best that I’ve seen is Chungking Express. I’d lead up to that with The Mirror, which is unique and quirky.
Watch Raise the Red Lantern and Possession ASAP!!
Chungking Express is great. I also enjoyed The Conformist and Mississippi Burning.
Cross of Iron, Chungking Express and The Conformist would be my picks. :-)
Make Chungking Express your 1,000th and you’ll never forget that milestone.

Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou)
The Company (Robert Altman)
both in my Top 20
Watch back to back Wong Kar-Wai.
Chungking Express and The Mirror
Chungking Express
Chungking Express all the way!
Make sure The Conformistis your 1,001th )
Exactly, Freddie!
Chungking Express then The Conformist!
Listen to Freddie!
999th – The Conformist/Chungking Express I don’t mind
1000th – Possession because it just has to be :):)
Thanks for all the feedback!!!
Wasn’t expecting nearly unanimous support for one film (Chungking Express), but that’s cool. I’ll probably make that one my 1,000th.
Still not sure what I’m gonna pick for 999. Will probably go ahead with it tonight though, so I’ll let you know. Thanks again!
Can’t go wrong with Chungking.
As for number 999…most people loathe My Blueberry Nights with a passion, so the odds are already against you. The Company and Cross of Iron also pretty divisive films. For what it’s worth though, I personally enjoyed all three. ;)
Possession, on the other hand, is simply one wild cinematic ride. If you want to make your milestone (or at least the lead-up to it) memorable – if maybe not necessarily in a good way – go for that.
That’s all I can comment on. Hope they go well for you, and that you do better with this milestone and others than I seem to do with mine own…
The Company
Cross of Iron
The Conformist
(and congratulations!)
Posession or The Mirror
^The Mirror
So, I went ahead and decided to go with Raise the Red Lantern for # 999. It was fantastic!!! 4/5 stars on Mubi and 9/10 on IMDB. Will definitely have to check out some more Zhang Yimou stuff.
Still planning on going with Chungking Express for #1,000, hopefully get to it within the next few days. And probably Possession and maybe, finally, get around to watching The Conformist soon after (I’ve had the DVD of the latter for at least a couple years now). Might get around to Cross of Iron as well, but the rest of the library selections will probably have to wait at least another month or so.
Yimou is one of my top five favorite directors, so I’m glad you’ll be giving his work a look.
Chungking Express as the 1000th, great choice!
Chungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai)
Possession
avoid Possession
Haha, I am going to check out Possession. From the MUBI top 20 threads, I know that this site is very divided on it, which only makes me won’t to check it out more. Look forward to loving/hating it!!!
And @ Uli, my next Zhang Yimou will probably be between Ju Dou and The Story of Qiu Ju. Recommendation between the two?
Possession is one of the best films about divorce ever made.
Ju Dou is infinitely superior to Qui Ju.
Possession is one of the all-time great psychological horror films.
Cap, either is a perfect choice, but Ju Dou has superior cinematography. Check my lists, there is one ranking my Zhang choices
Don’t care what 999 is but 1000 should be CHUNGKING EXPRESS
captain
So according to my MUBI ratings, I’ve seen 998 films. So help me pick my 999th and 1,000th films from the selection below:
Raise the Red Lantern (Zhang Yimou)
Chungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai)
My Blueberry Nights (Wong Kar-Wai)
The Company (Robert Altman)
The Mirror (Jafar Panahi)
A Summer in Genoa (Michael Winterbottom)
A Simple Plan (Sam Raimi)
These are the ones I have checked out from the library, so I would prefer to select out of these since I have already had them out for a couple of weeks and need to get them back soon. But there are some others that I own that I haven’t got around to watching yet, so if any of the following are uber-fantastic, let me know:
The Conformist (Bertolucci)
The Sheltering Sky (Bertolucci)
A Bronx Tale (De Niro)
True Confessions (Grosbard)
Little Noises (Spencer)
Prick Up Your Ears (Frears)
Hatari! (Hawks)
Cross of Iron (Peckinpah)
A Cry in the Dark (also known as Evil Angels/Schepisi)
Possession (Zulawski)
The Magdalene Sisters (Mullan)
The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (Kotcheff)
Mississippi Burning (Parker)
That Summer of White Roses (also known as Davolji Raj/ by Grlic)
The Railway Station Man (Whyte)
Heart Beat (Nitzsche)
Though most of that second list are really old VHS tapes (everything but The Conformist and Possession), so not sure that they will be able to perform
