“Twilight”…because how could you not feel bad after that crap?
they shoot horses, don’t they?
deeeeeeeeeepressing.
What’s the general theme for this festival? Seeing that you’re in LA, where are you hosting it (that will determine your general audience, thus determining some films you should choose.)
Of those I’ve seen in your list, I think it deals with somewhat depressing films. Give a little context for us to help you out better.
I just figure he wants some good movies that make you feel bad.
I guess the festival’s audience would be 1) those who hate manipulative crap such as Haggis’ Crash and Slumdog Millionaire; 2) those who see the beauty in the reality of humanity and therefore do not dismiss films that end badly; and 3) get the irony behind a festival called “The Feel Bad Film Festival.”
haha nice! Although, I personally think “Clockwork Orange” ends on an optimistic note since Alex seemed to have learned his lesson.
BTW: I hated The Road but delighted in people’s reactions when the film ended. People could not understand why the movie was made. I guess the puppy of hope wasn’t enough for them.
eh, yeah, i’d throw out Time of the Wolf and replace it with The Seventh Continent and Hour of the Wolf (if you’re looking for a “downer” vampire film). Replace Antichrist with The Idiots, Treasure of the Sierra Madre (which didn’t really end badly at all, sure they lose the treasure and Bogart’s character doesn’t last to the end – but he is rather like a villain, but the two “main” characters are laughing at the irony of it all – a downer?) with Under the Volcano, The Road with The Proposition (or Ghosts of the Civil Dead if you want to really get into it), and perhaps something like Lilja 4 Ever or Days of Wine and Roses.
But other than that … Dead Ringers, Winter Light, and White Ribbon are really great films.
Older filmmakers knew sorrow:
“The Last Laugh” and “The Blue Angel” as a double bill will make stout men weep….
“The Browning Version” with Michael Redgrave. Nothing like watching a man simultaneously lose his job and his health, and get utterly humiliated by his wife at the same time. Fantastic film, but happy….no.
“The Architects” about an East German architect trying desperately to create beauty in the hideousness of Communist Berlin. Between the arc of the story and the ghastly surroundings, trial by film.
I thought the original Japanese DARK WATER had a really downer of an ending, of course, not on such a scale as some of those you listed but…
Treasure of the Sierra Madre? Ever since I was ten I always thought of that as an upbeat ending.
