Help me unload my DVR!

Drew.

Ok ok ok I am sorry. I know its selfish when I clog up the site with posts asking what I should watch but I can’t help it. There are just way too many movies out there and I trust everyone on here’s opinion. So I currently have 54 films on my DVR (Thank you TCM, IFC, and Sundance!) and I need advice.

-A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
-And the Ship Sails On
-Bad Lieutenant
-Bram Stoker’s Dracula
-Brokeback Mountain
-Children of Men
-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
-Dazed and Confused
-Diabolique
-Diary of a Chambermaid
-Drugstore Cowboy
-Drunken Angel
-Far from Heaven
-Foreign Correspondent
-George Washington
-Gerry
-Ghost World
-Irma la Douce
-L.A. Confidential
-Last Tango in Paris
-Melinda and Melinda
-Mighty Aphrodite
-Mon Oncle D’Amerique
-Mr. Hulot’s Holiday
-Oldboy

-Saboteur
-Sabrina
-Short Cuts

-Talk to Her
-That Obscure Object of Desire
-The Big Sleep
-The Dreamers
-The Fortune Cookie
-The Fountain
-The Last Metro

-The Thief of Bagdad
-Throne of Blood
-To Catch a Thief
-Two Women
-Volver
-Wild at Heart
-Wild River
-Y Tu Mama Tambien

I probably have time tonight for two or three so any double/triple feature ideas would also be a great help. Thanks again and sorry if this annoys anyone.

Take a week off from work and watch them all.

Drew.

Haha I’m on spring break right now! But my stupid family and friends keep wanting to do things with me in the real world so I can’t watch them all nonstop. Haha

Brandon Bedaw

Have you not seen any of these films, Drew? I need some context before I can even begin to help… far too many must-see’s on that list to only pick a couple.

Drew.

Embarrassingly I have not seen a single film on that list.

Matt Parks

-That Obscure Object of Desire
-Last Tango in Paris
-Bad Lieutenant
-The Big Sleep
-The Shop Around the Corner

Well then, far too many must-see’s to only pick a couple.

I even tried making a smaller list of my “absolute favorites” from your DVR, and really couldn’t. All those movies should/must be watched. The only one I really don’t care for is Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. But even that’s pretty to look at, at the very least.

I say The Life Aquatic can go.

ArmandS

Children of Men – for action and some sci-fi touches
Mighty Aprhodite – for some Woody Allen laughs
Diabolique – for some chills and thrills

Drugstore Cowboy is amazing! I liked it better than Trainspotting.

Um….yeah… Sorry. You’re going to have to schedule some vacation time and just have a marathon. The only one I would definitely take off is Dracula (watch Nosferatu instead). You won’t be missing much by skipping Melinda and Melinda, though Will Farrell does do a good job pretending to be Woody Allen.

I decided to have a Bertolucci triple feature: Last Tango in Paris, Stealing Beauty, and The Dreamers. I just watched Last Tango and I am blown away. From what I had heard it just seemed like it would be porn with Marlon Brando but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was o amazing and Brando’s performance was wow just wow. Well my intermission is over I’m going to go watch Stealing Beauty.

Noooooo for some reason my DVR or the TV station screwed up and my recording of Stealing Beauty is just black. Damn.

4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days is a great film. Maybe a themed double bill with Ghost World (I won’t say what I think the theme is).

Chloe

Out of all of the movies listed, I would say delete Far From Heaven, Melinda and Melinda, Paranoid Park, and the Fountain.

-Children of Men
-Drugstore Cowboy
-L.A. Confidential
-Talk to Her
-The Big Sleep
-The Dreamers
-The Shop Around the Corner

That’s, uh…. that’s quite a list. Honestly if that was your DVD collection it’d be a pretty admirable DVD collection unto itself. I just have one question, though: you say you recorded these off television? ‘Cause, like, I just don’t see that going too well for movies like Oldboy. I don’t watch television, so I don’t know how those channels work, but as I understand it they are at least edited to fit space, if not take them down a rating from R to PG-13 (or televised rating equivalent, mayhaps). Anyway what I’m saying is that I’m concerned that you might be watching some of those titles and not getting to see the movies.

PolarisDiB, No I never watch films recorded from basic cable because in that case they are trimmed. TCM, IFC, and Sundance play the films uncut.

Well here I go again. Due to finals and the wonderful TCM my DVR is exploding. If you thought my list from 2 months ago was impressive take a look at this one. I wish I could watch them all but I only have time for one long one or two short ones tonight and want everyone’s help on deciding. Here’s the list:

-4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days
-A Canterbury Tale
-A Matter of Life and Death
-A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
-All About My Mother
-American Splendor
-And the Ship Sails On
-Bad Lieutenant
-Brokeback Mountain
-Cat People
-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
-Diabolique
-Diary of a Chambermaid
-Drugstore Cowboy
-Drunken Angel
-Foreign Correspondent
-George Washington
-Ghost World
-High and Low
-I Know Where I’m Going
-I Walked with a Zombie
-Kagemusha
-Mon Oncle D’Amerique
-Mr. Hulot’s Holiday
-Nights of Cabiria
-Oldboy
-Paranoid Park
-Red Beard
-Short Cuts
-Sisters
-Stealing Beauty
-Talk to Her
-That Obscure Object of Desire
-The Fountain
-The Hour of the Wolf
-The Last Metro
-The Life Aquatic and Death of Colonel Blimp
-The Lion in Winter
-The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek
-The New World
-The Pianist
-The Quiet Man
-The Testament of Dr. Mabuse
-The Thief of Bagdad
-Throne of Blood
-To Catch a Thief
-Two Women
-Volver
-Wild at Heart
-Wild River
-Y Tu Mama Tambien

Now that I’m thinking about it I really haven’t made much of a dent since I last posted a list. I really should just choose some of the above suggestions. Oh well, with an apology I ask for help on solving this wonderful dilemma.

These are my personal favorites from the list but I haven’t see everything on the list, and even one or two of these, like Diabolique or Two Women, are probably films you need only watch once:

-All About My Mother
-Bad Lieutenant
-Brokeback Mountain
-Cat People
-Diabolique
-Diary of a Chambermaid
-Drugstore Cowboy
-Drunken Angel
-George Washington
-High and Low
-Mon Oncle D’Amerique
-Mr. Hulot’s Holiday
-Nights of Cabiria
-Paranoid Park
-Red Beard
-Short Cuts
-Talk to Her
-That Obscure Object of Desire
-The Hour of the Wolf
-The Life Aquatic
-Throne of Blood
-To Catch a Thief
-Two Women
-Volver
-Wild at Heart
-Y Tu Mama Tambien

Fredo

Without a doubt, Y Tu Mama Tambien is the best film on this list. After this, I’d go with these, in this order:

Paranoid Park (my second favorite Van Sant film)
Sisters (my favorite De Palma film)
Talk to Her
American Splendor

If you like Elephant, you should like Paranoid Park. And if you really want to get free up some space on your DVR, just delete The Fountain and The Pianist.

Go with That Obscure Object of Desire. Bunuel’s swansong is not one to be missed.

Matt Parks

Drew, you don’t still have all of these on there, do you?

Drew.

Matt, Embarrassingly I do. In my defense I also watch movies on NetFlix, buy DVDs, and recorded other films that I wanted to watch so bad that I watched them immediately after recording them.

High and Low was fantastic.

Watch A Matter of Life and Death, followed by the sublime A Canterbury Tale. There. Settled.

Matt Parks

I know what you mean, Drew. we have two DVRs in the house and both of them seem to stay near-full much of the time.

Joshua W

My favorite on this list hands down is Drunken Angel. Mostly because it’s one of my favorite films of all time, I suggest you watch that. Other than that a few other favorites:
-Diabolique
-Hour of the Wolf
-I Walked with a Zombie
-Short Cuts
-That Obscure Object of Desire

I have the same problem, Drew. I’m trying desperately to get my DVR down but it’s a rough road. I’m always right around 99% full and I was really bummed when some Woody Allen stuff I DVR’d the other night made space by deleting Amarcord. I thought I had room! Anyway, I’ve got it down to 89% today with only one movie taping. I hope to get it down below 80% before Thursday when all the Truffaut movies come on. Managing the DVR is rough work.

Matt Parks

I’m down to 71% full.

Parky Zezman

I was about 99% full yesterday, but I deleted Babel, and I’m considering deleting Jezebel and the passion of anna. Yes or no?
