About 12 years or so ago there was a major revival of this. I think Rialto has it. Back in the 50’s it was a sensation and made ylvana Mangano a huge star. It’s a lively and very entertaining film.
Played at MoMA here in NYC a couple years back, I wonder where that print originated from…
This is this publicity still for the film:

Yeah, Bitter Rice should get a good release on DVD. The name might put people off into thinking it will be dry and too serious, but the movie is a lot of fun and a pleasure from any angle one wants to look at it from.
Yeah, great film! The funny thing is Silvana Mangano starred in a even better film that year, the little known gem Il lupo della Sila. Also director Giuseppe De Santis shot 3-4 better-but-less-known films, notably the absolute masterpiece Roma ore 11.
“But please a good transfer, not a VHS copy thrown onto DVD with crap subtitles and a runny image”
Picky, picky. The MOD DVD-R is better than nothing.
Criterion is planning on releasing this soon. Google is your friend!
Ben, beside that guy, who has had it as a Sure thing?
I suggested the title to Criterion years ago, so I would love it, but I’m still skeptical until an official announcement and cover art example (Hell, I’d possibly even preorder it, if it were true)

It was an official announcement, as in it’s happening. I really can’t be more blunt.
There’s a DVD of this released by the Italian company Cristaldifilm, and it’s a perfectly decent transfer for a film from the time. I think it’s out of production at the moment, but I have a copy.
Region-free DVD players are your friends!
Ben, from what sources is the guy basing the info off of?
The official statement says on the page – “Officially confirmed titles that have been indicated under way for a immediate release in the coming months on Blu-ray through website, press release, newsletter or blog.”
Here is the new years drawing that they released indicating upcoming releases. The Woman in black dancing was confirmed to be Bitter Rice.

I’ll bet on Blue’s left testicle that it’s coming out. I’ll retrieve it personally if I’m wrong.
Okay, I’ll take your word for it, but send your right eyeball if it does not come to pass, I want nothing to do with Blue Balls
Unfortunately more familiar with blue balls than I’d like to be. It’s a terrible thing.
…
Well, nothing from Criterion yet.
For the uninitiated, Bitter Rice is coming on TCM on October 15th, at 9:00 PM. That would be central time.
I just saw that this was scheduled for TCM on saturday. I’m excited to see it.
Ben, looks like you owe me your right eye ball.

It’s coming. Seriously. It’s on Criterion’s Hulu channel.
no shit? I signed up for HuluPlus, so, I’ll happily watch it again
Man, still only 50 fans here on Mubi, that’s too bad, it’s damn fine film
Still have this sitting on the hard drive of my DVR.
Been hearing a bunch about this. I think there was a small blurb about it on LA Weekly months ago…
Anyway, placing on “Must See” list now.
it’s an interesting film as it’s the tail end of neorealism, when they started injecting sex and violence to keep audiences coming. very film noir
Great movie! I watched it some years back when I was making my way through all the neo-realist films and found it a little too sensationalist to fit snugly into that category, but that was quite irrelevant anyways because I was blown away by it!
I still have it on my hard-drive also. It’s available on Karagarga and Surreal Moviez.

it’s available to watch on HuluPlus under Criterion
Uli³Cain
I saw this when I rented the VHS years ago from my local library, but have never seen it on cable and I don’t think it’s available in Region 1.
More people need to see this film and I probably need to check it out from the library again, buy why oh why ain’t it readily available?
It really is a solid film.
Can Criterion get this on the docket, Kino maybe, Someone, Anyone! (But please a good transfer, not a VHS copy thrown onto DVD with crap subtitles and a runny image)
Hey, Mubi, can you get it playing here?
