Help with forum codes - how do we italicize words, etc.?

MrE2Me

I can’t find any info on this, so I was wondering if someone could provide the info on how to format text (bold, italics, links, et al) here. I think putting asterisks on each end of a word makes it bold. I discovered this by accident, however. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

P.S. It would be great if there was a “preview” function here, so we could figure this stuff out without clogging up the forum.

It uses Textile, so if you Google that you’ll find yourself a page with their formatting rules on it.

-to make italics just put an underscore in front and right behind the word or words you want highlighted.
-to make bold, do the same with a star.
-to make a link type " then the url then " and then : and put whatever words you want to use as a link next. no spaces between.
to REPLACE an image into your page type ! then the url of the image then !
the image function works on pages and in the forum

-video embed: you can either upload to the site direct by going to
http://www.theauteurs.com/videos/new
you get 250mb per film

-or use the embed code from another site as raw html.
video embed doesn’t work in the forum.
-stylesheets won’t work, so don’t bother with them.

-to strikethrough type – and then the words you want stricken and then another – no spaces between.

Awesome, thanks so much for your help! I haven’t heard of Textile formatting before, I’ll do some research. Much appreciated. =)

Double post. (Now, if only we could delete posts!)

Thanks for the info Mr. Boo (I mean Against) – I post to other Criterion forum groups, like Criterion.com, where this is NOT a problem, as the codes all all there to be used. I think the auteur site really needs to think about this seriously, so those of us that like to use bold, italics, etc, to break up our (sometime long-winded) posts for variety could do so. What do you think? I also need to know how to delete double posts (or posts you no longer want to be identified with as writing – ie, delete). I am trying to see how it works here.

the “management” delete double posts on a fairly regular basis, so don’t worry ‘bout it.
textile is a little weird at first, especially if you are used to (x)html/css, but after a bit it gets very quick to use. blockquotes would be nice on the forum, especially where we’ve got a lot of activity (as in the last few days) and you want to refer back to something written ten posts up on a page. or the ability to comment on a post directly.
I know that there are plans in the pipeline for all these developments. We’re still in Beta here, so I just urge everyone to a little patience. I’ve been on this site a few months now, and I can tell you it changes fast and responds to user feedback :)

the boo thing is an anagram mate. don’t worry bout exactitudes.

Yeah, there really needs to be a Forum FAQ page at the very least. Being able to emphasize certain words, add images and links, and basically keep our posts as interesting as possible, is pretty much a must with message boards these days. I also would like to see people’s little avatars under their names in here…it helps identify them and give them a bit more personality.

For those of you who want concrete examples of what Mr. Boo explained, I’ll try to help out.

Italics_word(s) you want italicized_ = word(s) you want italicized

Bold*word(s) you want boldfaced* = word(s) you want boldfaced

Strikethrough – -word(s) you want crossed out- = word(s) you want crossed out

Underline+word(s) you want underlined+ = word(s) you want underlined

Links: "http://imdb.com/":http://imdb.com = http://imdb.com/

If you want to alter the text that links to the url, do this: "whatever you want the link to say":http://imdb.com/ = whatever you want the link to say

Images: !http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i19/MrE2Me/santasangre04.jpg! =

If you want the image to link to something when a person clicks on it, do the following: !http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i19/MrE2Me/santasangre04.jpg!:http://imdb.com/ =

(Obviously, you’ll change the url for both the image and the link, this is just an example.)

So the key symbols you need to remember are _ (italics), * (bold), – (strikethrough), + (underline), " and : (links), ! (images)

There’s a lot more you can do, but these are the basics. Any other questions, ask me or check out this site for a much more in-depth tutorial. I’m not sure how much of those tricks will work in the forums, however. You can do some fun stuff with your profile, though. Check out mine, for example.

Great work Mr E 2 Me in your latest post. This should all be included somewhere in the auteurs site opening to help others out there who haven’t found this thread yet on the site. I love (see, I am learning) the graphics aspect possibility you have incorporated so well on your profile. When I am brave enough, I will give it a try. Thanks again to the contributors.

Textile really seems kind of awesome, I’m just completely unfamiliar with it. It seems easy enough, though. Easier than HTML at least.

Have you newer posters out there seen this now old thread? It tells you what you need to know re codes for making your posts even more awesome. I know many are aware of these and use them, but in case any are not, here is the low down. There may be a posting of these codes somewhere else on site, I am not sure, but I use these all the time.
