How about Love and Honor?

contempt

I have not seen it yet, but I know Breaking the Waves ends in tragedy, as well.

I second Contempt while also adding In the Mood for Love.

Charlesdegaulle

Obviously this would not apply to Contempt, but does anyone consider with some of these love stories that end on a bad note that maybe the problems could eventually be resolved in events that occur following the film’s ending. I suppose films do not need to have closure. I’m not saying they would necessarily be resolved, but the possibility is always there, but perhaps the purpose of film is not to provide a happy conclusion

Please be careful of spoilers. I have not seen Contempt.

“Lovers of the Arctic Circle” by Julio Medem

I second Oasis, but I don’t think it’s as heartbreaking as they come. That honour would fall to Failan. And while we’re talking South Korean films, Christmas In August is also pretty heartbreaking.

Life as Fiction

McBean, I’ll second Failan and Christmas in August but prefer Oasis because it lacks the “Korean twist.”

i say ‘mon-rak transistor’… not sure if it’s full on tragedy, but it’s heartbreaking, no doubt.
that one never fails to make me cry.

Once.

I don’t know if I’d call Once heartbreaking…well, it’s close enough. In any event, I really liked it.

@JR

(spoilers)

The ending isn’t exactly happy, but it’s beautiful, sweet and appropriate. It’s a very good ending, imo—and not a small feat either.

Other films:

Brief Encounter
Bridges of Madison County—OK, I know the book has a bad reputation (I never read it), but don’t let that stop you. I loved Meryl Streep in this. Eastwood was fine. (I could have done without the scenes with the adult children.)
Camille with Greta Garbo
In a Lonely Place—Bogart is great in this; Gloria Grahame is terrific, too.

Ulu Grosbard’s Falling In Love, with DeNiro & Streep – a very powerful, yet subdued and undemonstrative, and very underrated film (with an unfortunately blithe, glossy popcorn-jazz score by Dave Grusin). And it’s not only the principals who bring the pain, here: the spouses, played by David Clennon and Jane Kaczmarek are very powerful, in their few scenes…

McBean

Oh…and Remains of The Day.

Jazzaloha

about 2 years ago

Remains of the Day is good, but I’d recommend the book over the film (except I thought the film’s ending was more appropriate).

@Wit

Nice to know that Falling in Love is good. I was always curious about that one.

Cloud 9 (German Film) is a very sad film about love

Priest (Antonia Bird, 1994)
The King & The Clown (Lee Jun-ik, 2005)

Someone else mentioned Failan (Song Hae-sung, 2001) which I would have on my list too. Also, Grave of the Fireflies (Isao Takahata, 1988)… albeit a different kind of love story, still painfully heartbreaking.

Life as Fiction

As Jazzaloha mentioned, please stick to the book for The Remains of the Day. The film doesn’t come close to doing it justice. What a heartbreaking journey it is.
