HOT FLASH--NEW ASTOR PROGRAMME NOW AVAILABLE!

For anyone roaming these boards who lives in Melbourne (it seems there are a few of us now) or anyone planning a trip to the city during the next few months, the NEW Astor Theatre calendar is available!

(Inside the Astor—note the Charles Chaplin poster on the right wall—the text says “Nobody wants me”)

(The big screen inside the theatre itself!)

For those of you who do not know, the Astor Theatre has operated since 1936 and is one of the few cinemas in the world that screens classic retro films on a near-nightly basis, with regular double bills, respecting film in its original 35mm and 70mm formats, AND in a capacity that holds 1,100. Yes, there are other cinemas that do nostalgia, but they either rotate films weekly or fortnightly as opposed to screening a different film almost every evening, or maybe only open their doora once per week or a couple times per month, do not respect film in its original format, and cannot match the Astor’s capacity and art deco surroundings. This is not intended to degrade these cinemas—any cinema that shows nostalgia in its original format is to be praised—but there’s no denying the Astor is one of the few in the world to rotate films so often, to offer such a variety, and to maintain an old school feel and atmosphere.

(The Astor Theatre also has Marzipan The Movie Cat. Nobody can argue with her).

The complete calendar is viewable at the Astor website (http://www.astor-theatre.com/) with selected highlights listed below.
