I particularly like the recent work of
- Ramin Bahrani
- Kelly Reichardt
- Lisandro Alonso
- Albert Serra
- Steve McQueen
- Lance Hammer
- Azazel Jacobs
- Joachim Trier
- Sang-soo Hong
- Andrei Zvyagintsev
- Apichatpong Weerasethakul (is he still ‘new’?)
I like Azazel Jacobs as well. I’m keen to see Kelly Reichardt’s “Wendy and Lucy”
And “The Day a Pig Fell into the Well” by Sang-soo Hong is excellent.
While I’m here (again), I’ll drop Azza El Hassan (Palestinian doc maker) onto the list.
I’ve got a lot of films to watch from a lot of hot new director since I know very little about many of those, but I would like to take this moment to once again (since I feel as if I’ve done so in other threads similar to this) state that I really enjoy and respect Lynne Ramsay, and really hope to see something new from her soon!
I forgot about photographer and film-maker Cao Guimarães. He is a genius. Virtually nobody knows about him though. His masterpiece Andarilho/Drifter (2007) isn’t even listed on imdb. His films are only shown at festivals and exhibitions as far as I know.
Just watched FROM THE WINDOW OF MY ROOM on his website. He appears to be the real deal. Thanks Grey Daisies
Anton Corbijn’s Control showed that he’s got more than what it takes to make a feature – that film is perfect.
and I forgot to mention Chris Cunningham, who has still yet to make a feature…But considering the length of time it took him to cut Rubber Johnny, and the brevity of both that and the “Sheena Is a Parasite” music-vid, it may take forever for that feature to get made…His masterpiece thus far, flex, lies in the netherworld of the art-installation environment (but for a painfully brief excerpt on the Cunningham DVD)—as with the best of Matthew Barney’s Cremaster series…
Chris Cunningham is one of the people who inspired me to take up filmmaking (after I saw COME TO DADDY). His work is astounding, and he’s a really down-to-earth guy to boot. I want to see FLEX badly.
McGuigan
Safdie Bros…
reygadas, lisandro alonso and mungiu…
joe carnahan, bryan singer, christopher nolan…
not exactly new bur fresh :)
Bryan Singer?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Also, I can’t believe someone recomended “Control”. That’s one of the laziest, most half-assed, least personal films of all time, which is incredible considering the director’s age and personal relationship with the subjects. A total yawn.
This thread is depressing.
Bryan Singer directed The Usual Suspects
he is a great storyteller and has spectacular visuals.
I don’t put down directors just cause they work on major blockbusters.
I forgot to mention Neill Blomkamp
District 9 is one of the best debuts ever.
i agree about Singer…not very good though and yes it’s becoming depressing not only the thread but the site itself..
oooh, so only directors who make artsy fartsy films count here.
you berate Singers, Camerons or Spielbergs filmmaker skills cause
they work in mainstream.
that is bullshit.
yea cuz we hat artsy fartsy directors so much! takoveskey and charliez kauffmann is just bullshitt!! hate them!
pretentious! :((((

Who do you think are the new up and coming directors today?
