how can i turn off subtitles on english criterion movies

was watching an english-language criterion movie. english subtitles were enabled but there was no subtitles option on the main menu page. couldn’t figure out how to do it with the remote (my remote is a samsung 00092a if that means anything to anyone)

any tricks i can try to remove these pesky texts?

Mess with the audio options on the remote. You may have enabled the settings from there.

yes, i have that remote! however the subtitles button doesn’t work. it brings up a bar telling me that english subtitles are enabled but i’ve tried everything after that and couldn’t figure out how to turn them off. the same thing happened with set-up ):
