The Lost Weekend – this was my first Billy Wilder and I believe it was WAY ahead of its time.
Rome, Open City – didn’t much care for it. By this time, I was very much into De Sica and Rosellini’s work didn’t hold up by comparison.
The Third Man – Incredible. Better than Citizen Kane.
Miracle in Milan – My least favourite De Sica and yet a brilliant work.
Marty – Not bad, but I was amazed that such a film would win at Cannes.
The Silent World – I couldn’t watch this all the way through, because it was a really unethical film.
The Cranes Are Flying – One of the best war films I’ve ever seen.
Black Orpheus – Didn’t much care for this either. A giant mess.
Viridiana – Bunuel is my second favourite director and this is one of his best works.
The Knack …and How to Get It – Ambitious and enjoyable.
Blow-Up – Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it. It was “good”.
if…. – Loved this film. So full of spirit and rebellion.
MASH – My first or second Altman (it was either this or the player). Dark and comical.
The Go-Between – Oy. Terrible.
The Working Class Goes to Heaven – Incredible.
Scarecrow – Mediocre.
The Conversation – Terrifying, really. If only Coppola could still make films like this.
Taxi Driver – Nothing can be said about this that hasn’t already been said.
Apocalypse Now – The second half was much better than the first half. Overall, not as great as people say.
All That Jazz – Really loved this one, which surprised the hell out of me.
Yol – Different. I don’t really know what to say about this one. Let’s just say it was really good.
The Ballad of Narayama – I don’t know why, but I’m repelled by Asian films. This was an exception.
The Mission – Really good.
Under the Sun of Satan – Not so much.
Sex, Lies, and Videotape – A great film. I agreed with Wender’s choice, despite what Spike Lee thinks.
Wild at Heart – Terrible. More Lynchian nonsense.
Barton Fink – The best Coens film by far.
Pulp Fiction – Vastly overrated, but still somewhat enjoyable.
Underground – Beautiful. Made me fall in love with Kustrurica’s work.
Secrets & Lies – Even more beautiful. Made me fall in love with Leigh’s work.
Taste of Cherry – EVEN more beautiful. You know the drill.
Rosetta – Just as beautiful, etc.
Dancer in the Dark – Not that beautiful. While not a bad film, it’s just kind of….I did like “I have seen it all”, though.
The Son’s Room – Wow, this one caught me by surprise. A genuinely sad work of art, that doesn’t resort to hollywood tactics.
The Pianist – The best work of Polanski, if I’m allowed to say that around here.
Elephant – Terrible. Awful. The worst piece of crap to win this award.
Fahrenheit 9/11 – While a decent film, this was just a shot at the US and for that, I say…bravo.
The Child – Again, extremely beautiful. As good as Rosetta.
The Wind That Shakes the Barley – This one has one of the best endings of any film.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days – I didn’t like this, but Anamaria Marinca gave an amazing performance.
The Class – More Cannes goodness, but it’s probably one of the lesser winners.

So, all in all, I have seen 41.

Apursansar: Where did you get a hold of Maria Candelaria?

Corduroy: That is also my mission, as well as my problem. I have pretty much given up on ever seeing some of the ones that won the first festival, including the aforementioned Maria.

Justin Vicari

I’ve seen 21, of which I think 6 were actually deserving.

Dimitris Psachos

man,i’ve seen half of them, and Corduroy, you’re right…Maria Candelaria by Fernandez for example is exceptionally rare but am planning to see it on YouTube one of these days..damn YouTube!!!!

“I’ve seen 21, of which I think 6 were actually deserving.”

if we compare Oscars and Cannes Winners…we’ll realize that what’s really worth is more obvious in Cannes winners…

anyhow..Cannes festivals from their beginning till nowadays have always been selecting interesting films for nominations…i never really cared of the winner,i mostly loved the worldwide action in it…

I have a pristine DVD of Maria Candeleria with English subtitles. I’ll upload it sometime. I just haven’t had the time lately. It’s a really nice melodrama, and the lead actress (her name escapes me) is unbelievably beautiful.

apursansar

Shakha, I bought a copy in Venezuela, but I think there also exists a NTSC DVD with English Subtitles. (EDIT: I just read Blue K is planning to upload it, there exists a version on youtube, but the quality is rather bad, so this would be great.)

Francis

Sadly, a track record that might be worse than the Oscars.

Francis, are you on crack? Cannes has made some dubious decisions over the years, but worse than the Oscars? Please.

“Sadly, a track record that might be worse than the Oscars.”

wrong…the Oscars still suck…

Justin Vicari

No, Francis’ point is valid, because the competition at Cannes is much wider — it’s not among 5 films but a large portion of films from around the world in any given year. So, even my 6 deserving ones — I might not have voted for them if I was on the jury that year, depending on what else was being screened.

Dimitris Psachos

“it’s not among 5 films but a large portion of films from around the world in any given year”

that’s why the Oscars suck..because 98% of the Oscar films are solely made in the U.S….

Justin Vicari

Right. It’s a matter of proportion, though. Given that Cannes has a wider and better selection to draw from.

Francis

Dimitris,

I didn’t say the Oscars were good, now did I? Your tone is nasty and unnecessary.

Dimitris Psachos

uuummm….yes, that’s true..but…if we’re thinking this way, then no one from Cannes would be satisfied from the result…i mean….from the ones i’ve seen, all of them were spectacular films on their own right without giving a damn if they were worthwhile winners or not…

the one that truly sucked though as a film was Fahrenheit…i mean seriously..that was exceptionally bad…both as a film and a choice…

Dimitris Psachos

“I didn’t say the Oscars were good, now did I?”

the fact that you proclaim that this “track record” is worse than the Oscars shows that you lower Cannes more than the Oscars..give me a break,i wasn’t nasty at all…

I think I’ve only seen around 40 of them. :(

@ Blue: Dolores del Rio! How could you forget!? She’s beautiful.

Stay away from the YT copy of María Candelaria guys. I think it’s out of sync sub-wise, if I remember correctly. I had to find my copy elsewhere.

I managed to find O Pagador de Promessas through, ahem, other resources and couldn’t find Eng subs for it for the longest time. Well, it happens that a kind anonymous soul out there created custom Eng subs for it not too long ago! I haven’t watched it yet with the subs, but maybe after the AWC is finished I’ll make that available on YT for people.

Francis

Blue K,

Do you really need to respond to me in such a manner? I believe that the best films that won the Oscar are better than the best films that won the Palme d’Or.

Justin Vicari

Also, there have been years when directors I really like won for films that are not their best work. So, that’s very similar to the Oscars, if and when the good directors even win at all.

Prizes are prizes, whether we call them prix or prizes in any language. They tend to play it safe.

And Fahrenheit won to show the enormous antipathy against Bush in Europe and the rest of the world. Even if Godard was invested in making the somewhat obscure argument that Moore was actually helping Bush.

Dimitris Psachos

Dolce Vita,Viridiana and Othello alone can smash 10 Oscar Winners….

prizes are prizes, sure….but we cannot compare Oscars and Cannes…Oscars are bigots,at least in Cannes we get to see selections around the globes, most of the times, but compared to the English language sausage fest of Oscars,i’ll take Cannes any year…

Justin Vicari

Well, you guessed 3 of my six. lol.
