His best is the Rohmer pic.
My Night at Maud’s. Mine is Z.
My Night at Mauds is ridiculously good. He’s an outanding actor. I think Maurice Ronet and Jean Yanne are right up there with him as far as great French actors go.
He is good in English too. You should check out “Under Fire.”
He was quite good in that comedy-caper Confidentially Yours,Truffaut’s final film.
Also Le mouton enragé (Love At The Top)- he played a white-collar bloke moonlighting as a ladies’ man to help a writer with his novel. Watch him slap the shit out of Jane Birkin!
He is a superb actor who needs more recognition.
If you need another good film to see that he was in, try The Great Silence directed by Sergio Corbucci. It costars Klaus Kinski and Kinski plays a bounty hunter who happens to be the bad guy, with Trintignant as a silent cowboy who is really on the good side but not according to Kinski’s character.
I picked Trintignant at full back for my French Stars XI list, but of course that doesn’t do his talents justice; he would be equally accomplished as a creative midfielder with a knack for ghosting in to score crucial goals. The Conformist, My Night with Maud among the standout roles, and let’s not forget Trans Europe Express
such an amazing actor.. I’ve only seen Three Colors Red, The Conformist, and Z
I’ve heard he’s excellent in Amour, rooting for him to win the Cannes
Also, he acted in quite an amazing number of very good films. If you only have seen 3 , you can hardly fail if you pick one at random
great great great actor
You have not mentioned “Il sorpasso” (The easy life)
And don’t forget “Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train.”
first saw him in il conformista and his performance was so convincing that i can’t help associating him with that character to this day. hate that slimy weasel ;)
THE CONFORMIST!!! My personal favorite of his many great performances…too many!!!
His cameo in LA NUIT DE VARENNES is astounding. FYI…THE OUTSIDE MAN (the L.A. set thriller he made with Deray and featuring Ann-Margret, Roy Scheider, etc) is being released by MGM (burn to order thing…the quality of those have been pretty good….the movie itself is so/so but it is a curiosity)
I don’t get why people like My Night at Maud’s, it’s not good at all compared to the other films Rohmer made at the time. But I guess that’s just my opinion, of of many opinions.
JLT acts on the new Michael Haneke film L’amour. Cant wait .
JAEGER INKMAN
I’m in the middle of A MAN AND A WOMAN and just thought I should pause and declare my deep affection for the man’s style as an actor. I’ve loved everything I’ve seen him in, from Z to The Conformist to Le Voyou to Three Colors: Red. I can’t wait to see Amour.
