Will have to think of some more for a list, but off the top of my head:
Richard Jaeckel’s death in ‘Sometimes a Great Notion’- Paul Newman furiously trying to save his brother from drowning. Jaeckel’s laugh at the futility of it all, and the smile he gives as he finally gives in to the idea that he’s dying is quite possibly the single greatest death scene ever filmed. It takes an otherwise mediocre film, and elevates it to where it actually stands out in the memory. This scene alone earned Jaeckel his Oscar nomination.
@Kenji,
the ‘Marnie’ scene you mentioned is a doozie!! One of my favorite Hitchcock sequences. Certainly one of his more underpraised.
@Scorpiorising,
My favorite sequence from ‘Fucking Amal’ (a movie full of great moments: the boy bending his cap bill in the mirror, Agnes going off on the girl in the wheelchair) is the kiss in the car. Takes an innocuous song and makes it great (at least for that moment)
All 20 minutes of The House is Black by Forugh Farrokhzad.
The beginning:
There is no shortage of ugliness in the world.
If man closed his eyes to it, there would be even more.
But man is a problem solver.
Near the end:
Teacher: You, name a few beautiful things.
Student 1: The moon, the sun, flowers, playtime.
Teacher: And you, name a few ugly things.
Student 2: Hand, foot… head.
… When the wooden doors close, and you see written across it, ‘Leper Colony’.

hoorah for Bigelow and Dang!!!
They would be a good double bill for a “Make Waves, not War” screening.
“The devastating scene where Seymour Cassel kisses the older woman in “Faces””
I just wanted to point out that Cassavetes did not really se the Florence character as sad or the scene as “devastating.” He saw Florence’s attempts to use Chet as a kind of living fountain of youth to be inspiring. The fact that she still, at her age, has all these emotions and longings indicates the great power humans have to fight against the urge to give up.

@ Dimitris Yes I dare you to make a list of 1000 of these. I don’t think there are any rules or restrictions to making this list. The moment could be just someone smoking or just staring directly at the screen for all I care. I want to see that one as long as it doesn’t include iconic and well-known scenes.
@ Traag I know, a lot of the moments I have chosen are climactic sequences but I am not so iffy about spoilers and I wanted to be as descriptive as possible.
@ Ralch “All of The House Is Black and Ritual in Transfigured Time”….. YES I ABSOLUTELY AGREE!
I don’t remember that scene from Sans Soleil, sounds wonderful. Maybe I just reject remembering almost anything from a film I really dislike.
No specific order…
Le pont du nord – Baptiste and Max practicing karate on the bridge at the end (and what happens before that too)
Black Girl – when the man whom Diouana nannied for goes to her village in Africa to return her belongings to her family, Diouana’s brother(?) chases him out of the village wearing the mask she had given the family as a gift (something they didn’t want)

Blowup – the tennis match
Weekend – the sheep appearing in the fields
Phantom – the mirror swivels before Lorentz
Le plaisir – the Communion sequence (second episode) and Josephine’s POV as she jumps from the window (third episode)
Film – when we learn that Buster Keaton and the camera are the same entity
Mon oncle d’Amerique – when we realize that the lab tests with the rats and their responses are the same as the characters’ responses
Wavelength – the photo of the waves and the police sirens?
scorpiorising
Or if you have a “life” outside this forum and cinema unlike me (whatever the heck that means), make it a shorter list.
A list of moments that define cinema or what cinema is to you. Hopefully, not a canonical or predictable list. Hopefully, a list of scenes from shitty, badass, campy, esoteric, snobbish films. Of course, you can choose predictable choices as long as they blend with the more unique ones.
This way, we can recommend more films (even bad films) to others, going to more detail. And I seriously believe that this kind of list really reveals more about yourself and what you love in cinema than your personal list of most favorite films.
And yes, I put serious effort and thinking to this, hehe.
