Definitely Stalker – I will always just be approaching a definitive conclusion to what this film is about.
Ditto for 2001.
Vertigo
A Clockwork Orange:)
Apocalypse Now generally makes my top five, but, if I had to pick just one, it would be American Psycho.
Mulholland Dr.
Antonioni’s Eclipse My favorite movie for all time…changed the way I watch any movie. Large impact on my life.
Lang’s “M”
The Godfather, Part II
That one with the frogs.
The Rules of the Game. And, hello, person above me.
Hello Beau my friend. Haha.
Some solid choices in this place.
“That one with the frogs”… Hmmm, I assume you’re not referring to Frogs, the abysmal horror flick. Unless you were joking, perhaps you mean Magnolia?
2001 gives Apocalypse Now a serious run for its money in my book. Most Kubrick films are worthy of top positions, in my opinion.
Yes Mr E, Magnolia was what I was referring to.
You cannot go wrong with 2001, so thumbs up.
Grave of the Fireflies
Yikes. There are so many different factors than can alter this answer. For example, whatever I end up saying my favorite movie is, I doubt it’s the one I would take to a desert island with me. Hmm…
All signs point to Fargo, I guess. My issue with calling it my favorite is that it’s very seasonal for me. I can watch it and love it whenever, I just don’t. When I look at my DVD shelf or whatever Fargo doesn’t jump out at me as a movie to watch. I think I’m pretty seasonal with my repeat viewings of movies. Weird.
I hear you, David. Apocalypse Now is far from being one of my most-watched DVDs. Funny how that works. If I based my answer solely on how many times I watched it, it would probably end up being something with “Monty Python” in the title.
City of God
Yeah, mine would be The ’Burbs or Empire Strikes Back probably. That was my summer vacation during grade school, watch them both every day during the day, play basketball in the evening when it got cool. Sometimes throw in a Karate Kid or Teen Wolf. Rinse, repeat.
I’m so sick of hearing about City of God. It’s all over this site!
It just isn’t that good a film.
Clone post.
Saving Private Ryan
The Double Life of Veronique. Bien sur!
Seven Samurai
@ David – ha! I still love The ’Burbs to this day. I had a few “rinse, repeat” movies when I was younger, too. There were entire weeks when I’d watch Aliens over and over again, nonstop. Ditto Gremlins, for some reason.
Synecdoche, New York
Barry Lyndon.
Picking just one film as a favorite is THE most impossible task you can ask. Sorry.
But, if I want to be political I’d choose the first film I ever watched:
“Koneko Monogatari” (spanish title: Las Aventuras de Chatran)
It was a film about a cat’s adventure I don’t remember where. The funny thing is, I hate cats now.

Awww, I love cats. =( I know it’s an impossible task, so I appreciate everyone’s responses.
The first movie I ever saw in a theater was Time Bandits. Great movie, but you can imagine how traumatizing some of those scenes were to me as a wee lad. The horse leaping out of the closet, the creepy skull creatures, the parents disappearing in a puff of smoke at the end…
Quatre-cent couples (400 Blows)
MrE2Me
…which would you choose? I know, I know, it’s not easy, but threads about favorite films always (and understandably) end up with huge lists in every post. I’m asking you all to limit your response to ONE film only. If you can’t narrow it down, just write the film that first pops into your head at the moment. My default answer to this question is always Apocalypse Now (the original cut). Something about it really got to me when I first saw it, and it’s stayed with me ever since. I love everything about it, even its imperfections. Coppola was a force to be reckoned with back in the day (The Conversation would certainly follow closely behind).
Your turn.
