even though i know its not the best film ever i can watch heat any and all times… love that flick man contemporary action/character studies lack in comparison.
Once Upon a Time in America. Hands down. Greatest film ever made.
The Miror by Tarkovski
Seven Samurai. christ almighty, i’ve never seen a film that was shot as well, written as well, as exciting, as funny, had such a great plot, had characters worth loving, some worth hating, some you grow to understand, others you feel sorry for, and still you wish they were all there in the end.
you have the hero,
the clown,
the victims/sad sacks,
the villians.
you have a film that changed the history of cinema and helped the west recognize the existence of Japanese cinema, and indeed Japanese people. Seven Samurai is my favorite film, and i still think its one of the best films ever made.
It’s sooooooo hard….ok… The fountain
The Swimmer
How could it not be The Rules of the Game or Citizen Kane?
Blade Runner
The Godfather
There is only about three movies I ever rewatch, and my favorite of those is Lawrence of Arabia. “No prisoners! No prisoners!” Best film moment ever!
I just watched Au Revoir, Les Enfants. I think this might be my new favorite film, it was fantastic.
The Swimmer’s an interesting choice. Unfortunately it went out of print. I’m glad I snagged a copy a while back.
Dante in Connecticut?
The Swimmer, This Sporting Life, The Innocents, Of Human Bondage 1964 version, The Ninth Configuration, The Sailor who fell from grace with the sea, The Razor’s Edge, Ship of Fools, Judgement at Nuremberg, Brother John, The Indian Runner, Island in the streams ,400 Blows, Murmur of the Heart
Blade Runner, in terms of it being my favourite film (but not necessarily my favourite film to watch over, and over, and over again, if you get me).
Fellini’s 8 1/2.

I can’t even pick one Western, or one film directed by Stanley Kubrick, or one performance by Jack Nicholson or Meryl Streep. Or one song by the Beatles. If I was to rob a bank, don’t think I could pick the best one to hit.
Thanks for the suggestions, folks!
The Seventh Seal [1957, Ingmar Bergman]
Pan’s Labyrinth really is probably my favorite film. I’m not sure why really, I know that it is not by any means a perfect film, or the best movie ever made, yet it is my favorite.
