I don’t think getting approval really matters… opinions are personal, and no amount of disapproval from anyone should affect them.
wow. i had this nightmare once too. only, that eternal bastard was stood in a giant conch like some rotten perversion of botticelli’s shell-rising venus and i could not think of one single word that he would want to hear from me. so i left. and woke up very sad :(
The fact that Godard loves you kids is found in his films. I bet if you mentioned Bertolucci, he would find something affirming to say – he has no need to be judgmental.
Well, if he feels about Nick Ray even half the way he did fifty years ago, we’ll be fine for a good thirty or so minutes.
First, I would have to know Godard… which I don’t. I mean come on, just because you can ascertain a certain sytle from his movies doesn’t mean you know the man.
Man, I’m always thinking about it. I don’t know what he thinks about the contemporary cinema…
Yeah, but you might run into him at an airport. You could introduce yourself and say you enjoy his films; thereby, reveal your taste in cinema.
Honestly, you think he is going to quizz you on cinema?
I hope not.
I have heard Godard praise 50s B pictures, Hitch’s films, admit to being a Chuck Norris fan.
He even say Striptease! When a 90s festival audience asked him if films have to be about something he said he had just seen Striptease and that wasn’t about anything
I suspect Godard and I would get along just fine.
I’d tell him I don’t approve of HIS taste in film.
I have read somewhere that prior to their first meeting in person with Godard both Bertolucci and Serge Daney threw up because of severe anxiety :)
Did Godard not think fondly of Bertolucci’s work?
Godard dedicated “Detective” to John Cassavetes, Edgar G. Ulmer and Clint Eastwood.
Man, I’m always thinking about it. I don’t know what he thinks about the contemporary cinema…
COHN-BENDIT: These screens, this equipment, these videos, these books… you’re really gonna get rid of everything?
GODARD: But it’s not getting rid of things — it’s all just a bygone era. Anne-Marie [Miéville] did it before I did. It’s over — you can barely create anything. The cinema is a small society that was formed a hundred years ago, in which there were all these human connections, money relationships, relationships having to do with women — and that’s gone. The history of the cinema isn’t one of films, just like how the history of painting isn’t one of canvases. The cinema barely existed. I personally attempted to turn it into something else. But these days, I’m on my last legs.
I think Godard would take more objection to the idea that you’re looking for his approval for your taste in films.

Jesus, he can be depressing…
I think he’d tell us all to get a better hobby… And personally, as much as I admire his work, I doubt we’d see eye-to-eye on film and I don’t really care. The discussion we could have, the debate that could lead to a deeper understanding, is all that would interest me in meeting Godard. Not some brown-nosing attempt to gain his approval of my personal taste in film. And I would say that about my least favourite filmmakers (Tarantino), and my own personal sacred cows (Ozu, Ogawa, Hou, etc.)…
I don’t look for approval at all in what I love. I’d simply want to talk films with a great director who started as a great film critic.
David, that dedication for DETECTIVE is badass. I think I’ll have to move it to the top of my queue.
Does Godard honestly believe what he said there?
He said it didn’t he?
I thing I don’t understand is Godard feels he’s failed to accomplish what he set out to do in life, but meanwhile he’s revered like a God in the film community, and he acts as if he were completely oblivious to it. Also, why is it a bygone era?
He talks about film the way musicians talk about the 80’s in New York.
“Oh, back then the city was nothing but poets and underground punk bands.”
Who the fck cares?
Godard may have been a good filmmaker but he was a windbag of a person. I’d probably be more satisfied if he disapproved of my taste.
Is this what y’all really have nightmares about? That’s hilarious. :P
@ Kate. -hahah.
Twasn’t a nightmare, Kate, was a dream. J.K. Rowling and Nick Cave also cameoed, which says a lot about my obsession with culture and possibly indicates bisexuality.
Godard is the last person I would seek approval from in my taste of films
Bahahahaha fuck no.
I just plain dont care what anyone thinks of my taste. My best friend hates Bergman. Most people I know dont like anything I watch other than the nonsense everyone else watches. My dad never watches movies because he thinks it is a huge waste of time and my mom falls asleep while watching movies and they both still love me and I love them.
If you are seeking approval from people, you will always fall short of the full enjoyment of what you like. I love Tarantino while some cant stand his work. I find Ozu overrated while some vaunt him as a god. It happens and I just dont care what you think. I will not argue whose opinion is greater or the best. I love having discussions about what you like vs. what I like and I find it fun, entertaining, and educational what we disagree about.
What if he smells? That would be terrifying…
…
@Tren de garsas: ha ha ha!!
I have a feeling he smells like Gruyere.

I just had a dream that I met JLG and tried to talk film with him. I brought up Bertolucci, and he immediately responded with, “It’s convenient for a 21 year-old to like Last Tango in Paris.” I tried to switch the subject to Tarkovsky and woke up.
If this was real life, I think it all depends what and who you bring up first. I.e., Spielberg gets you disapproval, but Nick Ray and Sam Fuller get you approval. Thoughts?
