yeah, netflix is definitely better.
rich are you some sort of film scholar? you always seem to name these obscure films in your threads that i have never heard of…
I don’t think I’ve named anything obscure, lately (anything available on criterion or that I can find on Netflix I don’t consider obscure (and some stuff beyond that)).
The only obscure film I push for on this site is Blues in the Night (1941).
But that is an acquired taste.
well actually its not just you there are a lot of people on this site who know so much. just wondering
yea i guess you have kill bill listed as a masterpiece (most people would consider that blasphemy but im with you there haha)
that’s because many people on this site consider it blasphemy to enjoy a movie.
Welcome to the snake pit.
Sekzee – Get the hell away from Blockbuster! I tried a free three month trial with them this winter, and had to contact customer service about twice a week with some sort of idiotic problem. They are horrible at customer service, their site is a joke, and they are slow indeed. Netflix is the exact opposite of them. I joined (again) this summer on a free one month trial, and they have been marvelous. I’ve never had to contact customer service once in two months. My DVDs have a two day turnover, and if something isn’t available at my local Chicago distribution center, they send it to me as a bonus from another one.
The local library here can supply most of my needs, but I join these services occasionally in order to see some films that my library does not have. Netflix is the best. Blockbuster is overpriced too.
thanks nate i will
I was beginning to think that I was a boob for liking Kill Bill. It was one of the first films that influenced my career path because it looked so fun!
yeah, Netflix really improved their turnover (a couple years ago it was pretty bad).
That site is probably my best go-to for finding a film since the campus library back in college (which had a wealth of silents on VHS, most of which are yet to appear on DVD).
happy hunting.
I think you guys have it all wrong. I would not go for the romantic comedy approach at all. The only exception is A Streetcar Named Desire. Since this is about more serious themes, like gradual descent into sheer schizophrenia, it might make you seem like a more serious artistic dude, or whatever. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc etc. might make you seem like you purposefully picked a touching relationship drama to either get in her pants or to make her fall for you via film. I don’t think these are your intentions.. but, if they are, that sucks for you.
Some Like it Hot is an exception, too. The romantic themes in this are too funny to take seriously. Consider Wilder’s Double Indemnity, a double crossing wife and a sucker of an insurance salesman take romance to violent death, it is definitely intriguing enough and well worth the time.
What kind of dame is she? Does she paint landscapes? Does she ever laugh? These might all be clues as to what she might enjoy.
When sekzee mentioned Irreversible it just made me think of Taxi Driver when Travis takes Betsy to the porno theatre. Too funny.
haa but i cant use the “I dont know anything about movies” excuse :) maybe i should show her my .44 magnum…
Sekzee,
Most of the films I listed should be in your average rental chain. If not, since you live in a big city, googling/phone directory should help you find an independent rental joint that should have a wide variety of films. I understand that this is an emergency… ;-)
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, etc etc. might make you seem like you purposefully picked a touching relationship drama to either get in her pants or to make her fall for you via film.”
The point is…?? :-)
Whoa, Sekzee that might be going too fast!… Oh, wait, are you talking about a gun?
I was making a reference to Taxi Driver and the gun. That scene with Scorsese in the taxi cab is one of the greatest ever filmed in my opinion. HOPELESSLY ADDICTED I actually live about an hour outside of Philidelphia. we dont hav a local indi film store nearby but this emergancy may call for some drastic measures. a trip may be nescessary :)
Blue Velvet
haha, just kidding. Sherlock JR. and if she doesn’t like it, well then maybe its a good idea to stop things before they start.
so…has anyone suggested in the realm of the senses? heh.
>>Or you could go with A Very Long Engagement which is another film Audrey Tautou made with the director of Amelie.<<
That was going to be my suggestion …
>>You picked the wrong crowd to seek guidance from…<,
Yeah. You think we’d have oodles of time to hang around here if we were able to get laid? Or had a real life, even?
You might try that Taylor/Clift thing that romanticizes the hell out of AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY…
>>so…has anyone suggested in the realm of the senses? heh.<,
Oh, hell, why not SHORTBUS?
It may be too late for anymore suggestions, but here are a few very enjoyable “date” movies …
Vertigo
Some Like It Hot
Hannah and Her Sisters
Chinatown
Jules et Jim
Double Indemnity
The Apartment
Diabolique
never too late for suggestions!
Go Irreversible. Who cares right?
Let her see Breathless, and she’ll obey your fantasy.
maybe i should show her my .44 magnum…
Is that a euphemism?
^ im glad you appreciate the indirectness of my statement:)
I would suggest Predator. Chicks dig the scene where Jesse Ventura gets gored. Also you may want to try one of the many Girls Gone Wild titles, and while you watch you should nudge her with your shoulder and wink suggestively.
But seriously, do you want to borrow any of my collection?
“Chicks dig the scene where Jesse Ventura gets gored.”
Who doesn’t, I ask?
Most major university studies suggest that the Spanish find this scene boring due to their exposure to bull fighting.
Patapon
i have blockbuster online which is pretty much the same thing but it takes about 5 days to ship out another dvd ha i am switching to netflix soon.
