Ingmar Bergman Film Locations (Trip to Sweden)

Dr. McNally

Hello,

In August, I am going to Sweden and plan to visit the island of Faro and hopefully other places where Ingmar Bergman filmed.

Can anyone provide me with some specific locations or point me to a good source of information?

I know that there is an organized bus tour on Faro where you are taken to sites where some of his films were made.
Has anyone taken this tour?

please take pictures…I was so naive in thinking if I came into this thread I would get hit with a link for some kind of Swedish airlines package vacation deal or something :D

Sounds like an incredible journey.

How about Gotland, and don’t forget Tarkovsky’s Sacrifice

Well, I come from Sweden so I should be able to help you…

If you are going to Fårö, I think that you should spend at least one day in Visby. Take a walk in the city and you will probably see some of the locations from Bergmans films. I’m thinking of many scenes from The Touch, and if you walk around the town wall you will see more locations from his other films. But this can of course be tricky since Visby, as any other city, has gone through some changes since the 60’s and 70’s.

I can’t help you regarding the tour since I never took it, nor know anybody who took it.

But if you plan to visit Stockholm you could always take a look at Filmstaden, the old film studio where Bergman and Sjöström shot some of their films.

Thats about all for now. Maybe something else wil pop up in my head later on. If you have any questions about this feel free to send me a message, or write it on my wall.

Have a great trip!

Some places that may be of interest to you

Stockholm : The Swedish Film Institute, home to the Ingmar Bergman Foundation and Archives

Royal Dramatic Theatre. Bergman was director and manager.

Stockholm University, where Bergman first became active in the theatre.

Uppsala : Bergman’s birthplace

12 Tradgardsgatan. Bergman’s childhood home. The house can be seen in Fanny and Alexander and Good Intentions, and was the inspiration for Wild Strawberries.

Akademiska University Hospital, where Bergman was born in 1918.

The Slotts Cinema (Slottsbiografen) dating from 1914, and where Bergman saw his first film.

Uppsala Cathedral dating from 1270 is where Bergman’s father was ordained and where his parents were married. The marriage scene is included in Good Intentions. See also the procession scene in Fanny and Alexander.

St. Erik’s Square (St. Eriks torg). The building with the 3 Romanesque arches is known as the Consistory and can be seen in Fanny and Alexander.

Academy Mill , now the Uppland Museum. Bergman used the mill building as the site for the home of the bishop in Fanny and Alexander.

Faro – where Bergman shot Persona, Through a Glass Darkly and other films.

Faro Church, Bergman’s grave.

When I went to Sweden I dragged my family out to Taxinge Slott (about an hour outside Stockholm) as it the estate where Cries & Whispers was shot. I highly recommend doing this if you can, as the house is now a conference centre and it is open to the public to walk around the grounds and inside the house. The grounds are EXACTLY as they were when Bergman used them and of course I took this tourist opportunity to make lots of replica shots of the park as seen in the opening sequence of C&W! The inside is obviously renovated, but it is clearly recognisable and in a few quiet corners you can stand and imagine… there is a little plaque inside the house to commemorate Bergman’s use of the property.

It’s particularly satisfying for a Bergman fan to visit this location because as we know the film was shot entirely on location in this house, so there are many moments one can choose to re-live in there.

Here’s a link to the official website for the estate:
