Hey all, I’m thinking about the High School Film as a genre and looking for inspiration beyond the American shores. So far I have a rather pathetic:

If…?
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Battle Royale
Entre les Murs

Any suggestions? Interesting to think about how overwhelmingly this genre is dominated by the States…

“High School Film” is an very popular genre in Japan too. I’ve got no statistics, but I reckon it probably comes close to if not exceeds America’s output as a percentage of all films made in the country. Mostly because it very often crosses over into the ‘sports’ genre.

10 Recent movies off the top of my head…
(these are not necessarily recommendations. I’ll post some of those later when I’m more awake)

Waterboys
Gambatte Ikimashoi
Swing Girls
Rookies
Crows Zero
Gokusen
Gakko no Kaidan
Lily Shushu no Subete
Drop
Battery
….

Well, there are lots anyway. Take my word for it!

There’s an obvious one that people are overlooking, although it may be difficult (or expensive) to obtain:

Frederick Weisman’s HIGH SCHOOL (NOT THE SEQUEL).

It’s a 75-minute documentary about a Philadelphia high. The opening is one of the great first scenes in movie history. A POV shot from inside a car as it drives through the streets and approaches the high school building, with Otis Redding singing (supposedly on the car radio), “Sittin’ at the dock of the bay…wastin’ time.” Then we go inside the building and proceed to watch the teens wastin’ time.

Thanks so much for all these tips – apologies for thread duplication, I did search school and high school and couldn’t easily find anything.

Memento Mori is a terrific – if messy – Korean flick worth catching. It’s tragic love story getting past censors as horror film. It’s not scary but it is plenty romantic. Gregory’s Girl takes place in high school. It’s been over 20 years since I’ve seen it but I recall it as being fine. Not sure if F***ing Amal is the equivalent of Junior High or High School but it may be the best of all.
