Is it possible to have an existentially transformative experience watching a film?

Thoughts?

Probably not. But, I think I did with TASTE OF CHERRY a few years back. I tried not to have it.
I would usually write something like that off

Absolutely (but only with the assistance of narcotics).

Seriously though, 2001: A Space Odyssey shattered my worldview so profoundly and tripped me out so completely I know I will never have another cinematic experience like it again. It affected me so much it’s hard to adequately put into words.

I think it’s quite possible for a viewer to have an eureka experience watching a film that triggers an existential transformation.

Yes. It’s possible to have an existentially transformative experience while drinking a cup of tea, too.

Scooter, you took the words straight out of my mouth! I was so profoundly moved that I finally became convinced I needed to become a filmmaker. I’m studying screenwriting at USC now, and I really do believe I owe a large part of it to Stanley Kubrick.

Of course, you’ve just got to be REALLY HIGH to do it.

Nick,

I’m sure we aren’t the only ones!

By the way, since I just graduated film school and studied screenwriting, may I make a minor suggestion? Read a ton of screenplays. It’s the easiest (and cheapest) way to learn the nuts and bolts of the craft and the myriad of techniques available for formatting, style, etc. The reason I say this is sometimes professors can be demagogues, and it’s nice to see the masters breaking the rules.

Congrats on your admission to USC!

On the contrary, transformative experience should be the purpose of any film and filmmaker

Watch Neon Genesis Evangelion (television series), Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, and the End of Evangelion. Sober (first). I dare you to marathon all of them.

@Jonathanwoo- I would take you up on the challenge since I do have Death and Rebirth and End of Evangelion but I simply don’t have the series anywhere.

I have the opposite. I have the Spark of Recognition, those Eureka moments when I see a movie and say, “THAT’S WHAT I’M SAYIN’!”, kinda like when I watched Eureka.
