This was my first Godard, and I saw it in theatres. It was worth the long trip (though I didn’t have to trek through freezing rain). My personal opinion is go for it.
yes it is worth it, it is alive in a way few films are
i think the big screen can be misleading in that u can fall in with the rapture of the crowd or grumblings from the crowd can hamper the experience
all things considered tho the big screen is always best because the movies are made for it
Thank you guys so much! I think I am looking to be talked into it, haha
Den, I know what you mean about how the big screen can be misleading, but sometimes I think it really enriches the experience of a film to be able to share it with so many people.
i agree umbrellas of cherbough and even This it It were movies that I felt in tune with the audience.
they can also make a horror film fun
i think “breathless” is arguably the most important and influential film ever made. yet and still, i dont think its worth a two-hour commute and freezing rain. youll find it playing in a theater again soon enough. its not rare at all.
it all depends on where u live
i live in a place that has one art theater that shows old movies
but never old non american ones
I can see the african queen there prob once a year but never breathless
As long as you won’t be disappointed if you come to dislike the film, but will anyway be happy to have witnessed an important work of cinema history, I’d say you should attempt your odyssey.
go forth! its easy for me to say its not worth it. i already know the beauties and wonders of the film firsthand!
I had a look at some of your favorite films and there’s no doubt in my mind that you’ll enjoy Breathless. However, I don’t know if it’s worth making a reasonably long trip in bad weather for just to see on the big screen. I don’t consider Breathless to be one of those films you HAVE to see on the silver screen. But if you do end up going, have a wonderful time and share your impressions with the rest of us.
Actually, yes, the only way I really want to rewatch Breathless is if I get an opportunity to watch it in a crowd to see how it affects them. Make the trip and report back.

I would say yes, I haven’t had the chance to see it locally and would travel to go see it.
Mariel’s probably on the bus by now.
I would say rent it, then if you like it enough go see it in the theater. If it wasn’t such a grueling trip I would say go but it sounds like the trail of tears.
It’s not like you’re traveling on horseback.
To paraphrase Inspector Clousseau, think of the inclement weather as “part of life’s rich pageant.”
More to the point, this particular film NEEDS the big screen.
It’s not good enough to withstand reduction to home viewing.
I think that applies to several of Godard’s pictures.
Thanks guys—- I ended up going, and I’m really happy I did.
good. hopefully itll be a fond memory for the rest of your life.
This thread is a thing of beauty – it is what the auteurs should be about.
Mariel experienced the film and more importantly, experienced the support of fellow cinéphiles.
What if she was going to see Avatar_….._*ouch* !

I admit to having never seen “Breathless”. There is a screening of it in the city tonight, an hour and a half bus ride, a half hour metro, and a trek through Canadian freezing rain away. Is it worth it to go see it on the big screen?
This also brings to mind the question of whether or not there is a difference between watching films on a tiny screen or on the grand screen in a cinema. What do you think?
