Is Ravenous the best film about cannibals ever made?

I’ve watched this film like five times and it keeps on getting better with each viewing. I think it explores every aspect of cannibalism. Plus it has a very tragic yet creepy score by Nyman.

Ravenous is an awful film. I haven’t even thought about it since I was a teenager. Why would you want to discuss a film like Ravenous on the auters?

it’s gotta a great cast, atmosphere to burn and has one of the best climaxes I can think of. I think this is one of Guy Pearce’s best roles.

Well, it is directed by Antonia Bird, a former theatre director with “Face” and “Priest” under her belt. I haven’t seen Ravenous but I’ve heard it is certainly not run-of-the-mill.

I would vote Delicatessen.

Never seen it.

How Tasty was my Little Frenchman is about cannibals and it’s one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE AND HER LOVER ranks up there. And wasn’t the director of CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST actually arrested cuz it was so realistic? And for sheer camp, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD would be my pick. Seeing that with a bunch of friends in college was one of the funniest nights ever.

Ravenous is the Rushmore of Cannibal films. The sum of its parts are greater than the whole.

I would go with Cannibal Holocaust. It’s a bit flawed to premise a shock film around the notion that “shock film degrades the individual, and is a poor obsession in society.” It has its shocking moments, although I would rate myself as the most de-sensitized. It is one of the most banned films and did of course lead to the director’s arrest but that says little of the quality of the film. I was rather surprised that it was more than plain, trifle, people eating. It has several scenes not more grotesque than “Sang de Betes”, but the entire package is well done. I certainly can’t wait for Deodato’s companion to the original, aptly titled: Cannibals.

Zombie Strippers also comes to mind. Overly camp, and I don’t know how much cannibalism takes place but worth at least some laughs. I caught it in the middle with a group, and we stayed on merely to find out what the title was and ended up watching the entire movie. We never found out what the title was, so we each took a guess and settled on the key plot points: strippers that turn into zombies, much to our surprise- that was the title (essentially).

I’m having a hard time to decide between Cannibal Holocaust (for trying to have a nice twist to it and the great Riz Ortolani score), Amazonia: The Catherine Miles Story (not sure they actually eat anyone in this one, but Umukai is the Bruce Lee of cannibal film), Delikatessen (seriously fantastic), Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals and Antropophagus (Joe D’Amato deserves mentioning).

Clearly, the best would be Cannibal! The Musical

Delicatessen is the BEST film in this genre. One of the best films period.

While it’s a very fine film, perhaps the best is The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (both soundtracks composed by Michael Nyman).

RAVENOUS’ score by Nyman and Damon Albarn is one of the best things to come out of the past decade (decade plus 4 months, I guess). However, I don’t remember jack about the film…what does that say? Anyone reading this post, please track down the music and check it out. One of my favorite albums.

I recommend watching it again. I know it’s asking a lot considering there’s so many great films to see out there, but I think it’s truely worth it.

Will do. It’s been four years, and it keeps climbing up my viewing list.

I have noticed that Corduroy suit spends more time criticizing people’s posts than adding anything positive or worthwhile.

There seems to be a lot of that going on around here lately, Evan.

Nope. Weekend is, because in a consumer society even your own husband can become meat to be consumed. And it’s a political act.
