I found the treatment of her ‘friends’ cold but I did not find her to be cold. Not because of her childishness but because her only goal was to save her child from going blind. She was cold because she felt she had to be disconnected. I guess you could say she didn’t want to lose sight one what was most important to her.
I think she is a sympathetic character, but she is bound by the theatrics of the musical.

Just watched this for the second time, it’s one of my favorite films; part of that may be my love of Bjork…but I noticed that, if you remove the endearing qualities of her childishness, she’s really vaguely proud and stuck-up for the first half of the film. Once the deed is done, per se, there’s an excuse for it. Her son’s operation and all that, but until then, she’s unnecessarily cold to people she shouldn’t be. Did anyone else get this vibe?
