Playtime in 70mm with mag sound.
Playtime
Les Vacances de Monsieur Hulot
Mon Oncle
I would definitely recommend Hulot, which is the only film I’ve seen of his so far. Great and funny film, you could probably watch it without subtitles and still get the humor, it’s THAT well-done. :)
David, In a few hours I am seeing Playtime in 70mm!
You are one lucky 15 year-old!
Playtime is my favorite of his, but I’d recommend starting with Mr. Hulot’s Holiday – it’s the most accessible. If you like that then move to Mon Oncle. Once you have gained an appreciation for his work Playtime will astound you. Trafic is also great, but I’d save that for after Playtime. Jour de fête and L’école des facteurs are also lots of fun and nice to revisit from time to time.

Playtime
The general consensus seems to be Playtime and I can’t disagree.
I’d start with Mon Oncle and then progress to Playtime
I’d recommend watching something from another director.
I’m sort of partial to “Trafic”. But really – if you like one Tati movie, you’ll like em all. His style is not similar to Wes Anderson, but his insistence on not expanding that style is. I see him as a good friend that I like to hang out with now and then. If only someone would release “Parade” and “Jour de Fete”.
I’m not a 15-year-old but I got to see Playtime tonight too and I consider myself lucky! It was marvelous!
He only made 6. See them all.
M.Hulot’s Holiday is great fun to start off with, then Mon Oncle, Playtime, Traffic etc…
They’re all teriffic in one way or another but “Playtime” is his ultimate film. It was shot completely silent and he spent two years
TWO YEARS
creating the soundtrack for it.
Tati is is of course related to Chaplin and keaton. But he’s a very subtle filmmkaer and his differences with the masters are marked — one you get to know his methods. After familiarizing yourself with say “M. Hulot’s Holiday” go back and look at specific scenes and examine the way he constructs gags. He’s never interested in “Big Payoff” style “belly laughs.” He prefers a quite chuckle. And that’s because he wants tou to pay attention to what’s going on off -screen. That is to say how what he shows you in his films can be found everywhere in th world we live in.
I follow David Ehrenstein. (perfectly stated: the meaning of his movies or ’L’Ecole du Regard)
Tati is the master of sounds ànd visuals. Please, if you need to pick one, choose Playtime/Play Time. But I would recommend to watch all of them, in chronological order.
Warning: you may get hooked for life.

Hello people. I really want to see a Jacques Tati film. So I ask, what film should I see?
