I consider them less rivals than teacher-student. Jeanne Moreau teacher, Charlotte Rampling student. Or maybe that’s just my way of saying that I prefer Jeanne Moreau. My favorite movies of hers being “Jules and Jim” and “The Bride Wore Black”.
Even in her earliest performances, Moreau had something simmering inside. She could fill an entire film with her presence. Rampling, and I am thinking of the first time I ever saw her which was in “Georgy Girl,” was a spectacular surface with not much else. She developed but it took time. I think she is a fine actress now but, even now, not as unique as Moreau.
Problem here is that Moreau has starred in some very good films for some very good directors while Rampling has not had such luck.
