Kanye West steals from Gaspar Noe

This is hilariously terrible:

Does this credit sequence look familiar at all?

He is shameless…and silly

JeanRZEJ

He didn’t direct it.

Dur dur dur, he is an admitted fan of it. Dur dur dur

Stop the press! Music video steals from film; next thing you know Blur will make a video full of references to A Clockwork Orange.

Oops, spoke to soon.

Or Last Year at Marienbad.

Drat!

Not a very good video.

I guess everyone’s entitled to like Enter The Void. He should’ve got Noe to direct.

I don’t see a problem with him ganking that idea (if it even was his idea) from Noe. The only problem is that Kanye is terrible.

White people needed a non-threatening rapper to rally behind and they got Kanye. Now the power went to his head and white people created a monster like they always do.

Clarice the Specter

^^geez, those white people ruin everything….ha!

I’m sure it’s not that simple…a lot of people talk about the “split” in rap and it definitely doesn’t simply come down to stealing and re-appropriating a “rapper”…

god, you guys didnt have to be so mean about it
especially Malik
If i wanted to be treated like a high-schooler, I’d actually show up for class!

@JASON — Whoa there. Don’t take your ball and go home just yet.

You gotta understand how places like this work. Everyone here (including myself) has a heightened sense of superiority.

You have to use reverse psychology in places like this. You should have posted it and said the new Kanye video is really good and creative and I guarantee the first response would have been something akin to, “Uh, I know you’re probably not the brightest movie watcher, but all Kanye did was steal from Gaspar Noe. You should watch his films sometime.”

Noe is the Mel Gibson of Euro cinema.

Sorry, I’m around heads a lot so I get me fill of Kanye debate on a regular bases.

It’s definitely inspired by Enter The Void. It’s also definitely half-assed.

The thing is those Blur music videos were actually respectful and creative enough to integrate several different aspects of those movies into the finished products, hence why they are successfully classifiable as homage. Hype Williams (the director of Kanye’s video) just pressed copy and paste.

The Enter the Void thing actually is what bothered me the least about the video.
What bothered me was Rhianna. I swear to god I hate her. So just because she’s in that outfit, singing, with red hair, looking like she’s a strung out crack whore…it’s supposed to be a good video? Because of that? Because you can see 80% of her boobs? No, I don’t think so. She ain’t all that. In fact she’s pretty damn far from all that if you ask me.
Second, there just wasn’t too much original about it. I mean really. First there was way too much “Look at my Jordans” and not enough actual things going on in the video. I mean the whole “Look at my Jordans” thing in itself is fine. I like rockin those Jordans too, but there was just TOO much of it here. And also I’m so sick of rap videos where all it is is a medium shot of the rappers face while he raps, with a blank black or white background and some flashing lights. God. This must have been, no, it WAS the least original Kanye video I’ve ever seen. And usually I’m crazy about Kanye videos.
Lastly, the fact that they made homage to Enter the Voids title sequance (they even through in Japanese characters in there which cracked me up) isn’t what bothers me. What bothers me is that kids who’ve never heard of Enter the Void and don’t know crap about anything that isn’t broadcast on MTV will see that and think it’s so original and amazing. and I actually like what they did with the titles in this video…how it went with the song…But like I said hardly anyone will actually KNOW where it came from…

At least this tripe wasn’t dragged out for two and a half hours like Enter the Void was.

At least we were spared a shot of Kanye West’s penis emitting a mysterious halo-like beam of light. For that, I’m thankful.

Right, because any music generated by a black person is invalidated if it appeals more to the indie scene than the hip-hop scene. DOWN WITH TV ON THE RADIO!

I’m no fan of Kanye, but at least he’s selective in his plagiarism.

Ugh, Enter the Void. I will NEVER understand why anyone would watch that film more than once. Gaspar Noe’s penis must be a giant callous after making that film.

Wait, I don’t think that’s really true at all… I mean Kanye is the man that accuses white people of purposefully giving the black community AIDS in an attempt to get rid of them. He accuses the same thing of the crack epidemic in the 80’s. Does that really sound all that non-threatening in comparison to Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, or Lil’ Wayne? I really think not…

Was that even a serious comment? I mean Drake used to be on a Canadian teen soap opera that my sister was addicted to… you can’t get more non-threatening to a white audience than that…

Exactly Caligula.

At least it wasn’t almost 3 hours and at least it didn’t show a horrific car crash 5 times.

i love all of these nerds hating on kanye west, when his album was one of the best records of last year, and literally every publication represented that. get over yourselves. and why are you commenting on a thread about this if you don’t even like enter the void? why even waste the time? i don’t get the stupidity…

Joshuah

I believe Thorsten Fleisch, hired by Noe, did the opening credits for the film (so says wikipedia), although the music video borrows from the actual film too, the credits more obviously…. still it’s a music video and for those that do watch them, they are fucking free. Thus I don’t see how this is theft. I really like the movie, although I completely understand why most people hate it.

I do however find it irritating (opposed to the film’s credits, which I loved) it’s the lyrics that are highlighted. Like a sing-a-long… makes me dizzy.

Hmm, best album of the year? Let’s try listening to music beyond the pop world. And what kind of validation is that ‘every publication represented that’ nonsense? That means nothing beyond brainwashed drone-speak. It’s like saying, hey Ebert thinks Avatar is great, so that must mean it IS great! Once again, venture outside the pop world and maybe you’ll find an artist worth bragging about.

Joks

Only in a dumbed down time such as ours can a guy like Kayne West—who doesn’t play an instrument, write music in a traditional sense, know theory, ora nything—be seen as a ‘musical genius’.

what a fucking joke. Quincy was right to call this guy out.

Who cares what a bunch of moron music publicatations say? Do you think these losers really carea bout music? they are just trend followers.

Josh H

Every Kanye discussion ever:

Fan: That album was incredible!
Non-fan: That album was terrible.
Fan: But Kanye is a genius!
Non-fan: Kanye is a pretentious idiot.
Fan: All the magazines and blogs gave the album glowing reviews!
Non-fan: Follower.
Fan: Hater.

It doesn’t get any deeper than that. Rinse, recycle, repeat.

deckard croix

It doesn’t get any deeper than that.

I don’t think Kanye deserves deeper discussion. If you think otherwise, then let’s dissect his music critically and theoretically.

Josh H

I wish I could do that, but I can’t. I’ve only started to take music seriously as an art form within the last month or two, and while I think the album is brilliant, I’m aware that my opinion means next to nothing (especially when paired with the anonymity of a forum). I was merely pointing out what I had noticed after seeing countless threads on countless forums devoted to the man and his work, and seeing none of them amount to anything worthwhile.
