kevin smith nomally does comedys what do you think of him doing a horror flick

Matt Parks

As opposed to horri-ble films? I kid. Horror’s been profitable recently . . . I guess there’s room on the bandwagon for Smith.

Ari

I wonder from the title if it is supposed to be some kind of political commentary too? I’m refraining from bashing Smith and his films any longer. I’ve decided it’s like making fun of disabled children.

Dennis Brian

not exactly a horror flick more a cautionary tale about republicanism, it sounds interesting

he edited it as he was filming and showed the whole film at the wrap party, seems he is gaining some knowledge

Trailer out. Not what I expected. Low budget torture porn from Smith?

Embed seems not to be working for me – here’s link:

-Low budget torture porn from Smith?-

Self-financed (~ $5 million) low budget torture porn no less (I guess this sort of explains Cop Out). Apparently Smith is saying he’s going to do virtually no interviews for the release of the film.

[sigh]

Will he ever learn? He should just go and write TV sit-coms, he cannot direct films for his life.

Ari

I remember reading even the Weinstein’s passed on financing the film. Curious about John Goodman in it. So from the preview, it looks like it features a Fred Phelps-like religious nut. I guess Smith’s political/religious commentary can’t fall any flatter than DOGMA.

So no interviews? And didn’t he also say no more press screenings? So Kevin Smith’s career is officially entering train wreck mode. I’ll try to avoid the schadenfreude (no, i won’t).

i hope it does well, for his sake. His career is arguably in even worse shape than his waistline nowadays. Zack and Miri did average business, Cop Out was a commercial and critical flop, and now he is moving into a ‘genre’ that he has no previous experience in. early word of mouth is positive, but it’s mostly from his film buddies like Richard Kelly etc, and i wouldn’t trust their opinions for the life of me.

Scott Mosier said good things and, though he is his producer, he’s always called his films on bullshit before. I’m intrigued, looks like nothing else he has ever done.

Ari

In some ways, his dialogue is perfectly suited for horror though. At least if it follows the conventions of the genre closely. Lots of young adults waiting around doing nothing so they have time to pointlessly pontificate on pop culture. Except this time instead of a dick joke climax, they get tortured and murdered. Huh, maybe this IS the Kevin Smith film I’ve always waited for since that’s what I’ve always wanted to do to his characters.

Joks

^^hahaha. well it does suit the climate of the post-Scream horror, perhaps, but not horror in the post-Saw world. maybe it’s a hybrid of both?

B.J.Friday: i know, Mosier is a pretty straight shooter, and you are right, it is unlike anything else he has ever done, but so was Cop out and look how that turned out? ;-)

let’s wait and see.

There are some horrible, useless, pointless horror movies, and there are some decent ones that hold up. I’m thinking in the vein of Devil’s Rejects, and some classic slashers that are still worth watching like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Evil Dead.

What really interests me in Red State is the cast. You’ve got John Goodman, Anna Gunn (the wife on Breaking Bad), Melissa Leo, Stephen Root, and Michael Parks, one of my favorites, who has been in Kill Bill, From Dusk to Dawn, and Grindhouse.

In any case, I’m totally game to see what Kevin Smith comes up with in Red State.

Joks

Has Smith even found a distributor yet?

Dennis Brian

Smith has decided to distribute the film himself after buying it for 20 bucks at his own auction

the reviews I have seen were dismissive, a talky horror film with no suspense in the vein of QT action films.

And he says that after he finishes his next film, a hockey comedy he will retire-

Allan

thank fuck for that

If I were him and I really cared about my reputation as a director or writer or whatever I might dial pack the podcasting or the appearances. I don’t think much of his skills, that is true, but it seems to me that he never really concentrates on making a film for too long before he moves on to the next venture.

I’m not sure whether he’s trying to do a Coppola and make money elsewhere them finance his pet projects on a smaller level, but part of me doesn’t think he really cares about making films as much as he is comfortable being a celebrity and a pal to some really famous people. If that’s what he wants, then fine, but make way for other people and stop pretending.

Dennis Brian

I honestly think he wants to make films like Cop Out and was hoping he could just be a for hire director

when yr personal projects and yr sell out projects do not work, where do u go from there?

I suspect he will end up being sort of a John Waters who is more famous with live shows and talk show appearances these days (tho in his case he really wants to make films).

I suspect he will be back to directing soon, he has an expensive lifestyle and will likely make another Clerks or something or maybe he will just write books

Pierre

William Castle he ain’t, for all the stunts around the film. I’d be happy if he were half as entertaining as Waters, but I’ll admit that Waters hasn’t made a halfway decent film in a long time, though I hope he made a ton of money off Hairspray. He deserved it.

Smith, I don’t know. I guess I shouldn’t be commenting on this anyway, since I’ve never found him particularly compelling. Though, like you said, you have to wonder how long his lifestyle can keep up if he keeps making less money. It seems like his appearances haven’t been selling out as much, at least the past few times he’s been around here, things have been “rescheduled”.

Joks

“I honestly think he wants to make films like Cop Out and was hoping he could just be a for hire director

exactly, it’s not looking good! Nobody is interested in Red State at this point. I thought he would pick up a distributor eventually. He could for dvd release though i’m sure but that’s obviously not what he wants.

“I suspect he will be back to directing soon, he has an expensive lifestyle and will likely make another Clerks or something or maybe he will just write books”

expensive lifestyle doing what? eating? he certainly doesn’t spend it on clothes ;-)

I’m sure he has enough money saved to splurge daily on comic books.

Dennis Brian

If his fans can bring in 10 to 14 million a picture (which they have doubled pretty consistently)

he should be able to make any kind of film he wants around the 5 million dollar range. He could have

a Woody Allen type career if he wanted (tho with a small fraction of the talent) and bring in a movie a year. He has tons of fans, Even his episodes of Degrassi were released on their own on dvd and sold out at a store I frequent! I hope Red State should not hurt his small but loyal fan base even if it sounds like all kinds of Tarantino

Matt Parks

-he should be able to make any kind of film he wants around the 5 million dollar range. He could have a Woody Allen type career if he wanted-

Even Woody’s spending $15-$22 million making a film these days.

Dennis Brian

true but at that price it would be a bad investment for Smith

Joks

what’s pathetic is that Smith is now saying that he always intended to self distribute the pic. if that’s the case why did he bother showing it to the Weinsteins then?

He is so full of B.S.

Joks

As for Woody, the reason he spends that much now is because he has stars.

Dennis Brian

Woody pays scale (tho he gives himself 2-4 million) for actors.

The most expensive aspects are probably behind the camera talent, reshoots (he allows for several weeks of them on each production) and location costs

Smith knows how to work on the cheap and could get big stars as long as he does not talk shit like he did about Bruce Willis

Pierre

@Joks – Smith’s fans seem to rally around him when there’s a bad guy trying to keep Smith from doing his “cool things”. They identify with him and think that they have a lot in common with him. He probably got some kind of back end financing from Harvey and Bob, but he made the decision to self-distribute so he can go on the road and preach to the already converted and show the film in the process. I’m sure he will make sure that there is plenty of merchandise to be had at these events. If this film got regular distribution and was in theaters, you and I know it would get killed at the box office and theaters would drop it after the first two weeks. I’m sure it was part of the plan, based on what’s happened with his last few films.

Dennis Brian

sounds like a good plan

he is going nowhere near my area tho

Matt Parks

-Woody pays scale (tho he gives himself 2-4 million) for actors.-

Right—a lot of people work for him for next to nothing simply because he’s Woody.
