Korine's Julien Donkey-Boy on DVD

Well, the DVD had been sitting at Walgreens for about a year, so I decided to buy it, haven’t watched it yet.

My hopes ain’t too high even though I know a number of you Mubi think it’s a great film.

What can I expect? And when I hate it, who’s interested in having it sent to them.

I’m more than happy to take it off your hand when you are finished possibly hating it.

Also, is your Walgreens an arthouse or something cause my local Walgreen’s has a minority of good films and way too many copies of American Crude?

No, the Walgreens (two in town) just has an odd selection of stuff, same with TJ Maxx and Ross (got the complete series of Miami Vice there for $36), Food Maxx isn’t horrible either, meaning there’s a diamond in the rough like three/four times a year.

I loved the film. The only Korine film that even approaches being a “masterwork” – not that it attains that, but it does come close …

Hey Uli, did you see it yet? I found it hard to watch as in, hard on the eyes and concentration. Korine does as usual combine the grotesque with the beautiful, the gentle with the cruel, the funny with the tragic. Also as usual, great use of music, a Puccini aria (O, mio babbino caro from Gianni Schicchi ) wafts its way through the film like something floating, elevating one suddenly away from the earthly plane the characters, and consequently you the viewer, are clenched within and upon. The touches of love and beauty are very moving. Ewen Bremner is wonderful as Julien variously maniacal, enraged, etherial, still, caring, violent, funny, frightened. Werner is a great asset as the somewhat demented eccentric father determined to get a winner out of one of his children at least, he says some very funny things at times. When he does not like how a wresting match goes between Julien and his brother Chris he says “I found it very very shitty”. There’s lots packed into this film, I don’t know if it’s his only “masterwork” as suggested I think all his films are masterworks…. I wouldn’t put it above Gummo or Mister Lonely … probably on first viewing Julien Donkey-Boy has a 8.5/10 feel for me.

Only an 8.5 for love & beauty?
