KWAIDAN VS. KWAIDAN

I love this film but the only version I have seen is the Criterion version. With the Criterion sale coming up I was considering buying it. But I know there are other uncut versions out there and I was wondering if anyone has seen all the different version. In your opinion is the cut Criterion version worth a buy or what uncut version would you recommend?

Thanks

I was wondering the same…I know at least 20 minutes of footage was cut out so I’d love to see it someday. I might just download it…

it might be good for anyone who can to see the uncut version before the Kwaidan vs Jules et Jim matchup on the 19th

PM me for the links to the uncut version!

One of only two 5/5 films from Round 1.2 so far, and I haven’t seen the uncut version. Is it a single scene that’s missing or bits here and there?

only parts but apparently most was cut out of “The Snow Maiden” maybe someday you should download the full version but a 5/5 already sounds good to me :P

what was your favorite story/scene, JR?

Vic Pardo,
Kwaidan is one of those long movies that felt like 30 minutes to me.

By the way. The Criterion version will cost only $14.99 with the 50% off so I coudl get it just because its such a good deal. I would still like some input from people who have seen both versions. Im not made of money you know.

Snow Maiden and Blind Monk were standouts, but I loved the whole thing. More Kobayashi, please.

Wow. I had no idea. I’ve got to check out that Masters of Cinema disc with the complete version.

If I was disappointed by The Human Condition and Samurai Rebellion, would I still like it?

hmmm…im not sure its very different from those two :/ you were dissapointed by HC? in what way were you expecting something more?

M Klein

@ Jason. Well, who knows if you’d like it. But FWIW I thought it was a very different kind of film to SR (I’ve not seen HC), and if all else fails, it’s absolutely ravishing to look at, an absolute lesson in ravishing, the kind of ravishing that made me wish I had extra eyes so I could see more of this film. And did I mention it’s ravishing to look at? To anyone thinking of buying this, just get the best quality version you can.

Does anybody know where I can get the Masters of Cinema version here in the US?
(if I get one, do I also need a PAL dvd player?)

There is a mention in the CriterionForum.org’s list of rumored potential titles/reissues that CC is looking to put out a complete and uncut version. I’m waiting for that one. I’ve seen the full 183 minute film, and I can’t ever dream of seeing it any other way.

That would be grea. I was very surprised when I realized that Criterion released an “unpure” version. But it looks like I’ll have to do with the Criterion version for now. At least the Haochi segment is complete. (Right?)

The Masters of Cinema Kwaidan set is region 2, so you’ll need a region free player (which you should already have since they cost 40 bucks of less!!!!), you can get it through Movie Mail UK, which is kind of like a british Amazon, very reliable. Link

You can also get it through British Amazon if you like…

Oh, and it’s NTSC!
So you don’t need a converting thingy. Although most region free DVD players do that anyway, I imagine.

Also, it’s a DVD of 4 ghost stories. What does the total running time have to do with anything? Just stop and take a break after each story. No-one’s forcing you to watch it all in one.

Sure, you’d want to think twice about drinking before seeing the full version at the cinema, but it’s completely irrelevant when thinking about DVDs.
