Depression does that to people. Next up in von Trier’s life is an 80s-style workout montage.
Saw this at Cannes this week – it was the film everyone was talking about. There are moments of genius, including a phenomenal slowmo b&w sex scene (yes, featuring a penetration shot, but I’d forgotten about that after the other famous scene in the middle…), but on the whole it is inconsistent with a narrative that trails off into ridicule (and a talking fox). I’m not sure how wide this will go as I think it’s going to need censoring in a large number of countries to even get into theatres on the max rating. Definitely thought provoking though.
Was just looking at next week’s new DVD releases @ amazon and was shocked to see that Lars von Trier’s Cannes contender, “Antichrist” is listed! Two versions, no less. One for $21 and the other for $27. Said to be released by “Indies Aus/Zoom” and “Phantasm Imports”, respectively. Both claim to be Region “0”.
I’ve already googled both Phastasm Imports and Indies Aus/Zoom, but can’t confirm the existence of this DVD based on the results.
This must be a mistake…but thought I’d let y’all know.
Has anyone else seen this yet? I’m very curious.
“Indies Aus/Zoom” and “Phantasm Imports"
Sound like bootlegs.
Yeah — Amazon removed “Antichrist” from today’s “new releases”, saying that the DVD “has been discontinued by the manufacturer”. Yeah, or maybe the manufacturer was busted for bootlegging.
Lars Von Trier is one of my favorites. Europa was one of the finest films I have ever seen. I am excited to say the least.
I think this ‘review’ of Antichrist is the best I’ve read yet. All hail this new wave of film criticism where you lambast a film without having seen it – a great time saver!

Although the PR company itself appear to be plumbing new depths of promotion tactics
Eagerly waiting for this.
Ah, no surprise that the “review” comes from the Daily Mail, the same “journalists” that demanded Von Trier to “justify” his film at the press conference at Cannes. Sadly, Von Trier came off as almost as much of an asshole in his response as they did (that whole “hand of God” nonsense that one hopes might’ve been his idea of a joke). I wasn’t so interested in Antichrist until the recent interview with him in the Guardian piqued my curiosity. He came off as far more self-aware and interesting than he usually seems.
Here is the new trailer:

Great movie, it was released in Spain about two weeks ago. I’m not a fanboy of Von Trier, but loved his last movie, a great and painful comedy, and this is a beautiful and deep study of pain and obsession. It’s probably the best horror movie since The Shining, because it fears us using the mind of an artist that is searching new (and honest) art. A masterpiece, probably. It’s strange, confusing and unexpected, what we should expect about high art.
Apparently, this was a really fun film to shoot.

Looks like it was all smiles and good times for Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lars von Trier.
This film had more slow motion than a Zack Synder film..
Just saw this yesterday and was blown away! It is truly a great film. I’ve never seen a film that’s so intense! My eyes were literary glued to the screen.
I shudder at that photo Owen posted because I know WHERE that blood on Charlotte’s shirt/arm came from.
Rarely has a film affected me in the way Antichrist has. I find myself thinking about it at random times; I even have the score on constant play on my iPod.
I took my mother to see this a week ago; I\‘m now afraid to know what she\’ll do with the poultry shears come the 26th.
one of the best 2009 films hands down! charlotte gainsbourg was awfully brilliant!
Forget about the poultry shears, Simon, worry more about those pieces of wood she claims are part of a bird-house kit …
I just find it amusing that someone has the “Antichrist score” on repeat on their iPod – is that the entire film score or just simply Rinaldo? :P
Deckard, the soundtrack I found on iTunes consists of the two instances of Lascia ch’io pianga and several selections of Kristian Eidnes’s sound work.
I loved this movie and thought it was the best movie, I had seen all year
I just saw this thing. I thought it was tedious, silly, overwrought and self-indulgent in the extreme.
JMHO.
David – Thank you for sharing. Join the crowd. The large anti-Antichrist cue forms at the rear. Guess you missed the vote in the Directors’ Cup, where the film got a similar negative reception from many voters. This is the film on site everyone loves to hate, so you have LOTS of company! Von Trier sure knows how to turn people’s buttons. Amazing!
Compared to Antichrist, Salo and Irreversible now seem like much loved films here in comparison.
Please keep those negative cards and letters coming, folks. I appreciate all the fresh insights. I am enjoying this – from the other side. Long may the chaos reign!
Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg are beautiful actors.
Princesscharmed797:“Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg are beautiful actors.”
In every sense, I think you mean. They are.
i love Antichrist.

Have Lars von Trier and Peter Jackson morphed into one disheveled, out of shape slob?
