^^Conventional choices, but good ones nonetheless :-)
My two picks aren’t as impressive as that unfortunately, particularly the second one ;-)
Last film 2011: Some Like It Hot
First film 2012: You Don’t Mess With The Zohan. with friends in the early hours of the morning, drunk. not making excuses of course. i’d seen it before and i actually like it haha.
Last of 2011: “Lost in Translation”. Literally watched it as the clock struck midnight on the year. I had a stack of old dvds of films I had never gotten a chance to see. Just so happened to feel like grabbing this one. Thought it was a letdown. “Virgin Suicides” and “Marie Antoinette” are both much better.
First of 2012: “The Parade” by Srdan Dragojevic (look for it at the Berlinale Panorama section). Wonderful comedy about homophobia and gay pride parades in Serbia. Haven’t laughed that heartily in a while.
“First film 2012: You Don’t Mess With The Zohan”
Who inflicted this on you?
“The Parade” by Srdan Dragojevic"
Hadn’t heard of this film. Looks amazing. I really like Dragojevic’s films from the 90s.
2011: The Mil and the Cross
2012: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo- US, and Drive
2011: Young Adult
2012: going to the theater tonight to rewatch The Girl With the Dragon Tatttoo
“The Parade” is really good but it’s also kind of a silly comedy at heart. I expect it to pass pretty much unnoticed at the Berlinale. It’s not quite a festival film and it’s not award bait.
2011: Lawrence of Arabia
2012: Late Spring
2011: Alan Clake’s The Firm
2012: Julia Leigh’s Sleeping Beauty
2011: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
2012: We Have a Pope
2011: Employees Leaving The Lumiere Factory
2012: Inni
i was halfway through that crap copy of a brighter summer day on google video. i would estimate 1/3 of the subtitles are unreadable :( hope to see it for real someday
Damn. I was going to watch that soon too.
Last: The Ascent
First: The Killing Of A Chinese Bookie
2011: Postman to Heaven
2012: Drive
Last film in 2011: The Adventures of Tintin (which wasn’t bad for Spielberg or not being the original Herge)
First Film in 2012: Married to the Mob (which I thought, incorrectly, my teenage daughter would enjoy)
Last Film Seen in 2011: Abu, Son of Adam
First Film Seen in 2012: Meat (Wiseman)
Last of 2011: L’important C’est D’aimer
First of 2012: Nothing yet, oddly enough. I’ve been glued to Breaking Bad since the 31st and I’m just about to finish the fourth season.
2011: What Time Is It There?
2012: O Brother, Where Art Thou?
[Though technically The Skywalk Is Gone was the last.]
Last Film Seen in 2011: Another Earth (Cahill)
First Film Seen in 2012: Death By Hanging (Oshima)
2011: THE GREEN HORNET (2011) — shitty
2012: POT O’ GOLD (1941) — ok but disappointing
Last of 2011: “The Lady Eve”
First of 2012: “The Big Lebowski”
I spent a large chunk of my holiday days off watching favorites.
2011: Hugo – Loved it. A perfect and sweet love letter to film preservationists, and lovers of movies.
2012: A Trip To The Moon – Georges Melies. Hugo made me look for this short film and watch it with my partner Mike. An amazing feat for 1902. Georges was brilliant!!
Laurence!
Well you already know this, but my:
last film for 2011 is ANNIE HALL. Classic Woody Allen. So I pretty much know what to expect, and didn’t get disappointed. But, this gets a little boring too sometimes.
first film for 2012 is PRETTY IN PINK. I started the year with John Hughes! Haha revisiting the 80s movies my brothers and I used to watch as kids.
Ruben Claveria, I can’t wait to watch Hugo! I also heard it’s as good as you say it is! :)
Last 2011 – The Power of the Press
First 2012 – Another Earth
Last of 2011-Mission Impossible (the original 1996 one)
First of 2012-Hugo
Last Film Seen in 2011: The Brickmakers (Marta Rodríguez & Jorge Silva)
First Film Seen in 2012: The Reckless Moment (Max Ophüls)
Uli Cain, The Mill and the Cross looks gorgeous visually (judging from the trailer). Will have to see this!
Last Film Seen in 2011: Moneyball
First Film Seen in 2012: The Turin Horse
Laurence Marvin Castillo
Last Film Seen in 2011:Amarcord
First Film Seen in 2012: The Godfather Part II.
Yes, I spent the Holidays revisiting the classics :)
