Fanny and Alexander: 10/10
WOW just wow
The Wrestler: 8/10
Revelutionary Road 6.5
@Samlane,
but I think he only takes roles that have a certain message to them, which means he has ended up working with some bad directors on strange low-budget projects, like that one where he plays a detective hunting a serial killer who runs people down in his car. Just bad. Someone should give him a copy of “Beyond Good and Evil.” :)
The Thin Red Line: 8.5/10 (great film but I didn’t connect with it as strongly as other people probably do. probably will take another viewing)
Wild Strawberries: 9/10 (this is the second time I’ve seen it, still like it very much)
Cries and Whispers: 11/10 (wow.)
Argento’s Mother of Tears – hysterical nonsense with awful dialogue and a pile of gore. Despite many flaws it’s kind of intriguing in places, so just about worth 5/10.
Paths of Glory, which I own. The scenes in the trenches never fail to amaze me and they only point to shots that come later in Kubrick’s career—for instance the hedge maze or corridors of the Shining. The station in 2001. The long shots through narrow corridors that simulate (and stimulate)this growing tension. It’s also a movie that only becomes more and more relevant. 9.5/10
I will also confess I almost saw Paul Blart today. There’s just nothing in the theaters here that I haven’t already seen. In the world of film, Feb is usually the cruelest month. Fortunately, I didn’t go down that road.
In the last week I’ve watched:
The Wackness — Surprisingly unwatchable 1/10
Underworld 3 — Surprisingly watchable 6/10
Manda Bala — Excellent doc 9/10
Pride and Glory — Really solid drama 8/10
Shock Corridor – 5 stars out of 5 or 10 out of 10, whichever you prefer
The Reader: 7.5/10 .. Made me choke up a bit at the theater.
Perdita Durango: 6/10 .. Maybe would have enjoyed this piece of 90’s nihilism more at the time.
Two Deaths: 8.2/10 .. Definitely deserves a better release.
Mister Lonely: 2/10
I really did not like this film… though there are some beautiful shots and moments… I don’t know what to make of Harmony Korine, he seems only able to think in segments, larger wholes fall apart. And his compulsive tendency at making inside jokes and references seems immature and trite. (Though I’m always a little impressed when a film can irritate me as much as this one did.)
Sexual Meditations by Stan Brakhage:
Office Suite
Faun’s Room Yale
Open Field
Room with View
Hotel
Very cool stuff.
the wrestler 8/10
Cria Cuervos 9/10 Ana Torrent is brilliant, she is like a female version of the young Antoine Doinel, only more psychologically dark and stoic. I have yet to get the song “Porque te vas” out of my head.
My Sister, My Love (Syskonbädd 1782): 7/10
THE GORGON, a film that impresses me more each time I see it, so 9/10
Vicky Cristina Barcelona: 7.5/10
Slumdog Millionaire 8/10
Divorce Italian Style; Marcello, Black, White, Sicilians, Sicily, Sex.. Live A Little! .. and relax, we’re all in this together-

Last Tango in Paris. Not a fan, but will give it 5/10 for Leaud.
Mocny czlowiek (1929) 5/10 Great double exposures and good ending, but very dated.
Mr. King
Shotgun Stories (Jeff Nichols): 7.3/10
