The Darjeeling Limited – 8/10
inland empire 4/5
Take the Money and Run: 7.5
Panic in Needle Park: 7.5
Pacino is fine in his first performance and doesn’t chew the scenery. Some give Kitty Winn negative reviews but I thought she was quite good and very expressive without over acting.
Good script by Joan Didion. Pretty minimal camera work but it makes things sufficiently gritty.
Stays under control, unlike Trainspotting.
“FAN FAN LA TULIPE” 1952 GERARD PHILIPPE. GINA LOLLOBRIGIDA.
FOUR STARS. SEE MY REVIEW IN NETEFLIX UNDER ML MANDRAKE
Derzu Uzala 10/10
After watching Beau Travail, I’m now convinced that Claire Denis is my favorite director working today: 8/10
Silkwood directed by Mike Nichols 5/5
Right now I am working on a short film about nuclear power. I am pro-nuclear power and I came across this title in my research. It is based on a true story about a female union organizer who worked in a facility that produced fuel rods for reactors and was contaminated. The events surrounding her death in a roadside crash are mysterious and the film does not explicitly imply that anyone intentionally tried to kill her. I expected it to be a brainless anti-nuke film like The China Syndrome, I was surprised to see that it wasn’t.
Just watched The China Syndrome (1979) dir. James Bridges – 6.5/10 mostly for Jack Lemmon
I’ll have to catch Silkwood, I think I may have seen it years ago.
Odd Man Out (1947) dir. Carol Reed – 9/10 how can you beat talking beer suds?
Once Upon a Time In America (1984) dir. Sergio Leone – 8.5/10
Tell No One (2006) dir. Guillaume Canet – 8/10 entertaining thriller
The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) dir. Victor Erice – 9.5/10 beautiful
Andrei Rublev (1966) dir. Andrei Tarkovsky – 9/10 I love the bell maker scene
oh I forgot,
Ivan’s Childhhod (1962) dir. Andrei Tarkovsky – 9/10
i had a good film week!!!
Le Doulos
9/10
My second film in my week long film-watching-fest.
The Guatemalan Handshake (2006) by Todd Rohal.
What a great surprise! I expected some kind of mumblecore bore but boy was I wrong. A funny and very original movie, beautifully photographed with a great cast (Will Oldham!) and some fine music. It reminded me a lot of Todd Solondz and Harmony Korine. Best American indie comedy I’ve seen in years actually. Definitely worth a look!
Roberto Rosellini’s: Rome, Open City 3.5/5.
I just had this ambivalance towards all the characters. I just didn’t care about them. However, it deserves a second viewing and a re-think since it is such an important film.
Jules & Jim 8/10
No Country for Old Men 7/10
Le Dernier des Fous (The Last of the Crazy People) by Laurent Achard – 9/10
The decline of a dysfunctional family in rural France, told through the eyes of a ten year old boy – a brilliant, unforgiving, inquisitive and finally brutal view point only a child can have.
Syndromes and a Century – by Apichatpong Weerasethakul – 7.5/10
Hugely enjoyable in the first half, funny and beautiful but ultimately disappointed me with its formulaic structure. The theme of reincarnation was overwhelming the story, leaving thin ground for any other developments. Still, the director needs to be given credit for merging narrative structures in a novel way and letting one theme breathe through the entire length of his film.
Stalker (1979) dir. Andrei Tarkovsky – I can finally read all of the threads about this film – 10/10
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade 6/10. Fun but rather weak in some spots, better than the latest by alot.
Dogville 8/10. Amazing and somewhat entertaining. Von Trier is one crazy guy but extremely talented and very ballsy!
There Will Be Blood : 8
Anderson finally found a decent script. He avoided the “more is less” incoherence and hyperactivity of his previous stuff.
Kapital destroying everything it touches. Thanks to Upton Sinclair for the ideas and thanks to Anderson for staying under control for once.
Two Lane Blacktop. This was a dud for me.
Last ones in a theater…Adventureland and Knowing. I liked both. 7 and 6 respectfully.
Ashes of Time Redux – 9/10
Missed it at the cinema last year, but the cinematography was magnificent even on the small screen.
there will be blood 3.5/5 second viewing. agree with Doniel.
The Last Days of Disco (1998) by Whit Stillman.
The last film of the “Whitman trilogy” (Metropolitan / Barcelona / The Last Days of Disco) is a great look at the end of the disco era. Brilliant dialogue, wit and splendid acting the whole way through. And Chloë Sevigny is adorable, oh my!
This film is the reason why I’ve been singing cheesy disco songs all day long. Everybody dance, do-do-do. Clap your hands, clap your hands, do-do-do!
Trouble in Mind 6/10 – Great style. Bad acting and a terrible character by Lori Singer. Kris Kristofferson and Divine are great as a washed-up cop and a fat gangster, respectively, who both share a dim view of humanity. A pseudo-philosophical, silly sci-fi neo noir set in Rain City.
Quicksilver 3.5/10 – Kevin Bacon as a broke stockbroker turned bike messenger. Synth-laden montages and 80s style without substance. Great style, silly film.
rewatched Chinatown 10/10
first time The Chorus 3/10

Prisoners of the Lost Universe starring Richard “Original Apollo” Hatch and John “Why do I keep making these kinds of movies” Saxon. The wife and I decided to have a bad movie night last night. This movie is so atrocious, so downright bad that it is good. Sort of. A must see for fans of bad movies.
