Nihon no higeki (Kinoshita) 5/10.
Au Revoir, les Enfants 10/10
i think a testament to how great this film is, is that even though i knew exactly how it ended from reading about it many times, when it happened it still hit me like a ton of bricks. i was so caught up in the experience of these school children that i couldn’t see anything like this happening to them. this is one of the best childhood dramas i think i’ve ever seen—i haven’t seen The 400 Blows in a while, but i don’t remember it having an impact on me like this Malle film just did. top to bottom, beginning to end—an almost perfect film.

Gonna have to give this another look. There’s a very good essay in the extras that links Oshima with Herbert Marcuse. Visually compelling film who’s rating would probably increase a bit on second viewing. Good extras package. Recommend this release.Jai nes pas Sommeil – 7.5/10. Another Denis jewel.
