Oh dear, Croonie. I think you’re ready for “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”.
Dark Waters (1993): 7/10
Pretty decent little horror gem, especially for the period.. great atmosphere and visuals. And creepy nuns of course.
Slumdog Millionaire 8/10
Red Desert 7.5/10
Paper Moon – 8.5/10
Chunking Express – 8/10
At Home….. Mouchette….. 9/10. superb.
Big screen…. Benjamin Button…. 8/10. brilliant. The film Forrest Gump tried to be and failed miserably.
Seven Samurai : 9.999/10
Gran Torino: 4/10 (worthless acting and characters, the end threw me for a loop though I’ll give it that)
Benjamin Button: 8/10 (love Fincher way too much, but not sure how much I want to sit through it again.. and its not a length thing, Ive seen Zodiac many times all the way through.. still its a heck of an experience)
Slumdog Millionaire: 8.5/10 (great energy and character development, a blast to watch, never boring, a pleasant surprise from Danny Boyle after the disastrous ending to Sunshine.. shiver)
I saw it in the theater and rewatched it on blu ray. There Will Be Blood10/10
In Theaters:
Bryan Singer’s Valkyrie: 4.5/5
I thought it was a fantastic thriller. I’m also partial to bryan singer, and fuck all the tom cruise nay sayers. He may be a crazy dude, but he’s a good actor in good movies.
At Home
Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow: 5/5
FANTASTIC! I can’t believe this same guy made tokyo drift, which i actually saw on t.v. once ( i was super stoned). Better Luck Tomorrow is a fascinating drama about asian american ivy-league-bound highschoolers who get deep in petty crime and drug dealing. Excellent visual direction, amazing attention to detail for an OC highschool, and great break-through performances. Please go see it.
Bound For Glory: 7.9/10
There were plenty of great moments in this one, but the soft focus throughout really bugged me. Also, I’m a big Woody Guthrie fan and I really wanted to see a little more of his life and hear a little more of his music in his style. All minor issues, though; I liked this a lot and though Carradine was plenty solid despite not looking like or sounding much like Woody. There was one scene where he sort of sang like him, but that was it. I must say that the steadicam worked incredibly well because I barely noticed it. Not bad for its first use.
Let the Right One In- 8/10
Didn’t blow me away, but was beautifully shot and had a much larger human element than I originally expected going into it. Very well done.
Sunday Bloody Sunday: 8/10
Gushing Prayer: 7/10
Tin Drum : 6/10
I remember seeing on 20/20 years ago about how the cops busted in on a guy and arrested him for having rented The Tin Drum from Blockbuster. The charge was possessing child pornography even though he had just rented it from Blockbuster. That was funny.
That’s not true. Is that true? Do Blockbusters still exist? I need to get out more.
Sextet: 1/5
Crappy prententious Dutch film that made me cry.
The last week or so:
Touch of Evil 50th Anniversary DVD [10/10] – The best one is probably the re-cut according to Welles’ notes version. The other 2 cuts are 8/10.
Paranoid Park [10/10] – I know, a 10? I guess I like slow motion skateboarding with psychedelic french music.
Let the Right One In [8.5/10] – It’s really as good as people say – and quite disturbing.
Narnia II Prince Caspian [4/10] – Well I’m not exactly the target audience, but it bored me to death. Disney didn’t seem too pleased either, I thought I read they dropped out of the Narnia series.
By the way giving a 1/10 to Footloose is like slapping a puppy! You are so mean!
Waltz with Bashir – 9/10. Very powerful.
In search of a Midnight Kiss: 4/10.
Hellboy II: The Golden Army. 4/5. I hate to love Guillermo. And watching the bonus features (troll market walk through) elevated my current dilemma. He shows so much passion and points out insignificant details that matter to no one else, but are imperative to make the story absolutely real inside his head. I find his art direction to be repetitive throughout his films; homogenous, as some would call it.
Brighton Rock 9/10. Tivo’d this on TCM the other night and was very surprised. One of the best British films of the 40’s.
Ton-I saw Paranoid Park about 2 weeks ago and would have given it about a 3/10. Guess dull witted skaterats are not my thing.
Les Enfants Terribles
Interesting film. Though, a bit too much Cocteau for me.
The Wrestler. Mickey Rourke gives an extraordinary performance. He was so “real” that I felt like I was watching a documentary. I hope he gets the Best Actor Oscar. This movie however is not for the faint of heart. I rate it 9/10.
the Wrestler 8/10 amazing performances all around i think
and just saw wendy and lucy(i saw it alone so that may influence my experience)7/10 it was just what i wanted
The Fallen Idol, Dir. by Carol Reed: 9.0/10
excellent.
Slumdog Badass – 5/5
People are talkin, talking bout slumdog,
I hear them whisper, you wont believe it…but Boyle gave us something to talk about.
Through a Glass Darkly – 9.275/10
Best Boy – 7.5/10. Very subtle.
Half Nelson 9/10
Scored with Broken Social Scene’s albums &
Ryan Gosling is amazing…Don’t believe me? Watch it.
KDR
On the big screen – new print of SHOOT THE PIANO PLAYER 9/10
On the small screen – LE DEUXIEME SOUFFLE 9/10
You just can’t beat the Nouvelle Vague….
