Star Trek Insurrection – Picard, Data and co. always nice entertainment 8/10

The Da Vinci Code – the extremely boring stepson of Indiana Jones?? can’t understand why this was such a success 4/10

Cabin Fever – definitely not a good movie, but there’s something (funny and entertaining) about it… 6/10

Network: A+

I’ll need to see it again, but what a film! Having the benefit (curse?) of seeing the film so many years after it entered the cultural zeitgeist, I was amazed at its prophetic view of US media culture. When Peter Finch began to deliver his first, great, “I’m mad as hell…” monologue, I found myself tearing up—even though I had seen that scene before, albeit out of context. That’s the power of the film. Just beautiful. And Ned Beatty—wow. Excellent film.

El retorno del Hombre-Lobo (Night of the Wolfman)   4.5/10 – If you like Vincent Price/Roger Corman collaborations, Paul Naschy’s films are a natural extension of that aesthetic.

14 Hours. Great camera angles, tight tense and well acted. 9/10 the only down is a few side side plots that take away from the films main story.

The Invisible Menace (1938) **

The first available Farrow. A 55 minutes crime story with a great Karloff, but far from his great films.

Slumdog Millionaire: 8.5/10
-Stunningly well made and very engrossing despite a perhaps non-commercial premise, though the message or subtext was a little heavy handed.

Valkyrie: 3/10
Someone spent a lot of money on this boring, uninteresting, horribly-accented (yet ably-shot) movie. So Bryan Singer has made one good film so far.

Hunger, worth watching for an astonishing scene comprised entirely of a single uninterrupted shot that lasts for about ten minutes in which Bobby Sands (Michael Fassbender) explains his philosophies about martyrdom to a priest that’s as exciting as any action sequence in a Steve McQueen movie. 7.5/10

The Friends of Eddie Coyle – 9/10

Hadn’t seen this for so long. We should send Criterion a thank you note.

If you are tempted to blind buy – just do it. The dialog is so good and sets up a rhythm that the camera and the editing reinforce.

The film catches a place and time perfectly. A jewel.

Contempt 8/10

i’m being generous, not because the film wasn’t good, but because when i watched it i probably wasn’t in the best “film-watching” mood. it had the pieces to be a great film, and i enjoyed everything (mostly) that i saw (damn that Bridget Bardot was hot), but i didn’t get anything out of it. i’ll definatley have to re-watch it. it looked and acted like a Godard film, which to me isn’t a bad thing. they’re never as good to me as Breathless was when i first saw it, but he’s seldom boring. i’m glad this one didn’t bog us down with the tortured artist storyline that usually happens in movies about movies—although the artist is tortured, its his marriage not his “art” this time. well-paced, beautifully shot, and its nice to see Fritz Lang obviously have a sense of humor. i disagree with Roger Ebert, i thought Jack Palance was great as the a-hole producer.

Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The (3/10)
Appreciate the effort that went into this, but it just didn’t work for me.

Delicatessen (6/10)
Lies somewhere halfway between Amélie and City of Lost Children; not as well formed as the former, and not as twisted as the latter, but good fun.

Harlan County U.S.A. (8/10)
Watched this one on THEAUTEURS last night. Great doc. Great characters.
