Il Decameron 9/10
A Short Film About Killing 8.5/10
Kung Fu Panda – ostensibly a selection for my toddler son (who paid it little attention), liked it alot. It cadged more than a bit from a favorite of mine, Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle, but it’s nonetheless beautifully animated, rendered, voiced, etc.
Synecdoche New York (only just opened in the UK). 10/10
Rolling Stones: Truth and Lies
Told me nothing I didn’t know already. Annoying. 1/10

Rear Window: 9/10
Vertigo: 9/10
Psycho: 10/10.

Neil, I’m curious, are you watching these films (the last seven you rated) for the first time? If so, you must be having loads of fun!
Machine Gun McCain 7/10
Drag Me To Hell 10/10
Lost Highway 9/10 (about my 4th viewing)
It seems weird rating Sam Raimi higher than David Lynch, but there you have it.
Katyn — Andrej Wajda 8.5/10
Any reason this hasn’t received a general release? I was fortunate to see it in a theater.
This isn’t the story of the events of Katyn except for a brutal final 15 minutes which show the assembly line massacre.
The question is how do we react now and how do we remember it. There are several subplots concerning primarily the women who have
husbands or relatives among the disappeared. One involving Magdalena Cielecka as Agnieszka involved in an Antigone like quest to have a stone put up in rememberance of her brother is particularly moving.
The Russians are still calling this Polish hysteria. A must see.
Drag Me To Hell – 9/10
Heaven On Earth (Deepa Mehta, 2008). 4/4.
The Canadian DVD (Mongrel Media) has the film transferred at 1.78 from the original 2.35, so should be avoided.
Yeah, I wish…No Soybean – seen most of them loads of times. Although, I had only seen Rashomon once many years ago (and remembered thinking what all the fuss was about). I’ve been breaking in a new tv/home cinema setup, so I am watching a lot of films from my collection on a much bigger screen than I am used to.
Anyway, back to business…
Dark City: 7/10.
Miami Vice – 1/10 (Turned it off after about 15 minutes).
Drag Me To Hell: 8/10
Jaws: 6/10
Wise Blood 8/10
I think this was the weirdest damn thing I’ve ever seen. It sure as hell made the south look like a wretched place to stay the hell away from. John Huston had some kind of weird gift to make the unwatchable totally watchable. This was a pleasent surprise since the past few films I’ve gotten in the mail were incredible let downs. John Huston—boy, you are good.
House of Leaves
Last Tango in Paris: (9/10)
Heartbreaking story. What I get from this film having just seen it: beautiful camera work, excellent story, and my god what a powerful performer Brando was. Amazing.
