C+
This movie doesn’t feel unique, exciting, or wondrous. It feels forced and soulless. Not much freedom of filmmaking or the extravagance of adventure shines here, I don’t think it’s worth 2 and a half hours of anyone’s time. That and it’s a real bore at times. But I can’t deny how good it looks at moments, and I always love Thewlis.
Jackie Brown (Dir. Quentin Tarantino, 1997)
Hadn’t seen JB in a long time. I actually shed a tear for some of the tenderness between Grier and Forrester.
^My fave Tarantino film to date.
Mine too
Favorite Tarantino is Jackie Brown? …really? To me that’s his weakest film. It’s not bad or anything, but… something just feels missing / off about it.
Wasn’t there that famous quote where Tarantino said he would have died for any of his other films while making them except for Jackie Brown? I think you can kinda sense that when you watch it, a little bit.
^He probably felt constrained having to work from source material. And that’s why it’s his best work.
I like Jackie Brown, but I have an admittedly broad generalization to make about people who claim its their favorite Tarantino film. These are people who don’t like Quentin Tarantino. Based on a novel, it’s the only of his films in which the actors don’t speak in his “voice.” While the results worked, Tarantino’s dialogue is the main attraction for me (along with the freedom he employs in structuring his films.) Jackie Brown shows that he can do other things well, but when I go to a Tarantino movie, it’s to see a movie on fire with its own potential to go anywhere.
Yeah, I would imagine QT’s lack of love for Jackie Brown is probably because it’s the one film that didn’t come from his own precious (big) head.
And Brad, I like QT and have enjoyed all his films (except for Kill Bill). Jackie Brown just stands above the rest in my opinion.
If I may intrude…
I love Jackie Brown a lot. I would be more than happy to drop everything right now and watch it again. But it is far from my favorite Tarantino. My favorite is Pulp Fiction, second is Reservoir Dogs, third is Inglorious Basterds, fourth is both Kill Bill films, fifth is Brown, sixth is Death Proof (which I actually enjoyed the hell out of)
Reservoir Dogs … it’s just cool. I don’t think it’s an exceptional film though. Fun, hip…ya. but as a film it’s aight.
Its so fun I’ve seen it near 10 times. I would watch it all day if I had time.
