Late Spring – Ozu 10/10
Listened to the rather good commentary for the first time. He’s right, the final curtain shot of the waves is a little much and absolutely the only false step in this virtually perfect film. Love the bike ride on the beach. Ozu practically becomes a dervish with the camera.
“When A Woman Ascends the Stairs” (Naruse): 10/10.
Sad, beautiful, human masterpiece. Ozu material, but different style, done with enormous insight and compassion.
The (comparatively) rare and powerful combination of B/W and Cinemascope is used perfectly in this film.
Inglorious Bastards 7.5/10
Jennifer’s Body 2/10 terrible terrible script by Diablo Cody and horrible non-acting by Megan Fox
The Informant(Steven Soderbergh) 8/10
The Ninth Gate(Blu ray) 8/10 Most underrated Polanski film

The Human Condition (parts 1-4) - 8.5/10
A healthy sense of irony bleeds into nihilism. Immense.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall- 5/10- Judd Apatow has to stop making these dorks cool!
Aw, “Missy”, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is funny. I don’t care if dorks are cool or not. Oh well.
I watched Audition last night. Um, this movie sucked 4/10.
Wolverine: X-Men Origins – 6.5/10
“George Washington” 9/10 – Wow…. beautiful. It felt a lot like Killer of Sheep, which is one of my favorite films.
also “Matthew Barney No Restraint” 6.5/10 – Wanted to know more about the content/process of his work, and to see more of the finished product in order to better understand it. Still, it was an interesting watch.
Stalker (1979) by Andrei Tarkovsky: I give it 9/10. A very complex story handled beautifully.

Marin Karmitz’s “Nuit Noire, Calcutta” (1964) – 9/10
an excellent short film with dialogues by Marguerite Duras, with a great performance from Maurice Garrel, stunning b&w cinematography by Willy Kurant and an amazing score by Luc Perini.
Maruice Pialat’s “Janine” (1961) – 7/10
Pialat’s second short film (after his stunning “L’amour Existe”), a simple yet entertaining storyline, with great nocturnal b&w cinematography! starring and written by Claude Berri.
Trouble The Water – 9/10
Big Fan 3/4 – It was alright. A little difficult to get through, slow. But not bad.
Stardust: Probably a 3 / 4. It was a good, fun movie. Of course it had flaws, but it was cool just to get sucked into this crazy world. There have been movies to pull you in better, and into better drawn worlds, but this film was good on its own terms.
Savvy
Robert Frank’s short “O.K. End Here” (1963) – 7/10
Intriguing Antonioni-esque short film, filled with ennui, beautifully photographed (as would be expected), starring Martin LaSalle (from Bresson’s “Pickpocket”)
Zodiac 10/10
District 9 9/10
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2: Electric Boogaloo 4/10
