Street Angel – Frank Borzage 9/10

True to the Borzage maxim “Leave no tear unjerked”, Janet Gaynor makes this one exclusively hers. Fine camera work with some fine tracking shots and nice use of shadows, but the film is Gaynor’s.

Doinel and I are on the same track:

I watched “Sunrise” (1927) with Gaynor and George O’Brien. 9/10.

It’s a simple potboiler of a story (temptation/infidelity) exactly as intended, but with a hallucinatory overlay of unforgettable visuals. Expressionism meets Hollywood. Gaynor and O’Brien are very strong as the couple.

You have to look past the occational melodramatic moments and see the thing for what it is: a meditation on human feelings and the cost thereof, set in a universe alternately moody and simple (the village) or frantic and soulless (the city) and done with camerawork and lighting that should be required viewing for anyone contemplating working in cinema.

“Gallipoli” 9/10

Not the Gibson feature, but a Turkish/Australian documentary on the particular hell of that theatre of war.

Ghastly destruction of everything, especially human life, in a see-saw over very little land.
Brilliantly done, and highly recommended. That war is nothing but waste has rarely been shown so well.

Fast & Furious: 3/20- This turd wasn’t fast and it sure as hell wasn’t furious! Why do i waste my time who the hell knows! All i noticed was Paul Walker’s career was done before they even shot a single frame and Vin Diesel is getting old and bloated!

Up in the Air
61/100

I loved the initial interactions between Clooney and Farmiga. They reminded me of classic Hollywood pictures. The film seems muddled, as if the director isn’t quite sure what to make. Or the “message” seems trite and banal.
