caligula: one of tinto brass better efforts
8.5/10
Is that a joke?
Robley, in the middle of all those classics, how do you put in Caligula? Was is like a pallet cleanser so you wouldn’t be overloaded with great films?
Caligula was even worse than I thought it would be and I wasn’t expecting much to begin with. Just a terrible, terrible movie.
Haha, exactly Brad.
Agreed Jeff.
i saw caligula being trashed so I rated it maybe a little better than it deserves probably.
it was tinto brass first big budget spectacle and had an all star cast
penthouse produced it to counter playboys film industry which produced Polanski’s macbeth
Penthouse picked the right story for on film debauchery and the right director, the talented mr brass.
it was sexy and the acting was fine.

I’d need to be passed-out wasted to properly enjoy Caligula.
I don’t know if you should call it a Tinto Brass film or a Bob Guccione film? I know if I was Tinto, I’d want my name removed from the credits too. Unlike Den, I thought the acting was atrocious and I hope the paychecks were worth it for McDowell and Peter O’ Toole. The script was unbelievably bad also. The sex scenes were alright from what I can remember, though
the script was by gore vidal
it wasn’t bad
brass today has fonder ideas about the movie,
according to a new book I am reading called hellraisers
about the life of Peter O Toole and Oliver Reed
Gore Vidal denounced it later.
he has denounced a couple of decent movies that he wrote yet he never denouced that joe pesci drama with honors
It was the last hurrah for the big sex spectale on screen (until showgirls I guess) and for me it was a fine addition, an interesting marriage between porn and historical epic
uggh… With Honors was fucking awful.

“Cherry Blossoms” (Doris Dorrie) 9/10
A quietly devastating film with completely unexpected turns, it tells the story of an older couple and the wife’s discovery that the husband is dying. She doesn’t tell him, but suggests they go visit their grown kids (who have little interest in having them around.)
Full of love and compassion, this is a memorable, sad and beautiful piece of work.
