Woody Allen, Henry Jaglom, Sally Potter, Clint Eastwood to name a few
Larry Charles, Robert Redford (who never sold out as a director)
“I have nothing to look forward to in theaters.”
then start downloading…dude, start searching, there are so many amazing 2000’s films, are you really expecting the usual suspects all the time?
to get back to the question…do you specifically mean U.S. directors or around the world directors? (including U.S. of course)
p.s.: Oliver Stone hasn’t made a single good film after Nixon (and i’m being mild!!!!)
there’s a whole world of films out there way beyond Hollywood and the US to explore!
There is a new Woody Allen movie with anthony hopkins, Redford has a movie about the lincoln assassination, Jaglom has a new one and Potter just did Rage
There is this website called TheAuteurs.com, where you may get many ideas of what to watch beyond the usual by-the-numbers Hollywood product. ;-)
He is, I guess, talking about movies hitting theaters and to find a good one of those is rare particullary if u dont live in a huge city. And there is nothing better regarding film then seeing one in a theatre
Why cant we just accept Hollywood films for what they are: entertainment. If you are looking for cinematic revelations than look here
oh no,not the TIFF again,arrghgh!!!
Sekzee,Hollywood is entertainment but let’s be honest…nowadays,95% out of that meat machine is nothing..
so why analyzing it in a deeper consequence?
Well, there is the occasional Drag Me to Hell and other entertaining mainstream movies coming from Hollywood… but is happens soooo often that these products are not even good at an entertainment level. Not to me, anyway.
Im not analyzing anything, I consider films like Star Trek and Iron Man to be very entertaining.
“Im not analyzing anything”
oh Sekzee,i mean the OP above all of us ;)
ha oooo I gotcha
The Coen brothers can make funny stuff but they should try more serious things. Clint Eastwood made Invictus which ruined the chance to make a movie with Nelson Mandela. Also Spike Lee has not done anything. Werner Herzog is caving in. Never was a huge fan of Woody Allen. I’m not saying there is nothing made independently I’m just pointing out I see nothing in theaters and this is the worst decade of Hollywood with remakes and sequels. Movies are trying to become video games it is ridiculous. It just seems impossible to even attempt to make money for an independent film unless you make a paranormal activity and give it to Spielberg.
“It just seems impossible to even attempt to make money for an independent film "
search,search,search…
I hope this doesn’t turn into another “there hasn’t been one good film released this entire decade” thread.
Still love the Coen Brothers, PT Anderson, Eastwood is the last remaing of the old guard Hollywood directors like Don Siegel. Woody Allen has not sold out, I still have hope for Scorcese and Henry Jaglom has never made a good film. 2009 has just been a poor year all around not just in Hollywood-few good Foreign or Independent films.
“few good Foreign or Independent films.”
wha-wha-what??
no year is a poor year…let’s be serious for once.
and why is there a distinction between Independent and “Foreign”?
“2009 has just been a poor year all around not just in Hollywood-few good Foreign or Independent films.”
You sir are not searching hard enough (or at all).
Law-As far as Foreign films go I live the midwest-not many are available for me to see until the following year such as the new Handke. So my opinions are on what I am able to view which does have some limitations. Independent American films have been pretty weak for quite some time. In the US Independentt films usually refer to films made here outside the major studios.
People have said: Allen, Redford, PTA, Eastwood, Coen’s.
but im gonna go ahead and add one in my opinion who WAS a hollywood director but made something of an art piece with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher. although it failed in many aspects it was a departure from Fincher’s other works like se7en and fight club.
Steve, DVDs and online are the ways to go.
Ignore independent films, “foreign films” is where it is at, because the US has fell cinematically behind so many other nations.
Steve, make sure your posts dont come across one-dimensional.
Have you seen any of these films?
The Hurt Locker
Two Lovers
The Cove
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
Three Monkeys
Tetro
All excellent films from this year
American movies have been cheapened because of their expense.
Volpe-I thought Button was a beautifully shot film but too contrived to be convincing. Fincher’s best film is Zodiac.
Sekzee, some of those films you listed are not 2009 though ;)
and no,i won’t accept the “U.S. release” argument,haha.
Which ones?! Am I mixing up my years??
Well, I saw all of them this year :(
4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days (2007)
Three Monkeys (2008)
for example ;)
Two Lovers was also released as both a festival film and a regular release in Belgium and France in 2008.
Law-A lot of foreign films are not released here till long after they come out if at all. Dvd’s are where I see most of them. I refuse to download films to watch them on my computer screen. The picture is just too crappy to appreciate the films.
Eli-Unfortunately Hollywood has geared its films mostly to the meltiplex under 25 crowd who want to see big budget CGI films. It wouldn’t be so bad if they used some of their profits to fund smaller films but they seldom do anymore.

My friends and I have been discussing the last remaining directors. The legendary Kurosawa is long gone and the few others left that still make great films are Oliver stone(assuming Wall Street 2 isn’t him selling out) and Paul Thomas Anderson… maybe Alex cox hopefully repo chick is okay. Martin Scorsese has become a Hollywood monster. Frances Ford Coppola has been reduced to making something here and there. Spielberg really has nothing. I really do not wanna watch any video game movies and transformer movies. At least there might be hope for Soderberg with Che. Ridley Scott is stuck with Crowe. I have nothing to look forward to in theaters.
