Terrence Malick
Paul Thomas Anderson
I once had high hopes that David Gordan Green would be the next Malick, then came Pineapple Express…

I see Korine as the next malick right down to putting linda manz in gummo

“And you have Gangs of New York as one of your favorite films!”

Do I really?. I really need to clean up that favorite film thing. Every time I look at it these days I am convinced someone hijacked my account and is playing a trick on me. Needless to say, GONY is not a favorite. Even when I liked Scorsese more I didn’t much care for that one.

You lost me when you referred to Oliver Stone as a great director.

Dennis Brian

stone made nixon so he is a great director but Incredible inconsistent

“where did you hear about Ragin Bull 2?”

Yes, they are making it, but Scorsese isn’t involved and it is also based on the book by the same name written by none other than Jake LaMotta…it’s like half prequel/half what happens even later in life. Personally I don’t find it a bad thing, it seems to have promise as a pretty good movie, but my only problem is that people will compare the works even though they’re completely different.

I never said Stone was an incredible director. I just threw some movies together for favorite films I have not even looked at what I have there. I will be putting up a great movie list soon. Stone is just one of the last directors I have respect for. Movies are taking over art and film is not progressing. I have nothing to look forward to being made. I’m okay watching old Japanese cinema but I just don’t see aspiring filmmakers having a chance in the outside world. I spoke face to face with the Wachowski brothers and they really do not know half the films on this site. Andy Wachowski had no Criterions. Terry Gilliam is also falling downhill. Hopefully he can come through with The man who killed Don Quixote. But there really is no hope. I see independent film festivals falling apart along with the recession.

Are we only talking about American directors, cause we tend to get overseas filmmakers forced to sell out. But one that consistently has turned down hollywood’s invite is Pedro Almodovar!

Dennis Brian

true and godard and roberto benigni; he might not make good movies but I suspect he makes them from his own artistic vision not hampered by selling out

L.A.™

Sorry i believe benigni sold out as an actor and director. Plus i think his pinochio attempt was co-funded by the weinsteins. He also made the forgettable son of the pink panther! I think John Sayles is another one who really hasn’t sold out he just knows just how to play the game. I think the closes he got to making hollywood films where Lone Star(a masterpiece in my opinion) and Eight Men Out!

Dennis Brian

it was directed by blake edwards he probably thought son wud be a good film. Also pinochio was a lifelong dream for benigni, Fellini himself wanted to make it with benigni in the lead

I fail to see where Scorsese has “sold out”.

I know people are rather harsh here. Yes the departed was a hollywood film but damn people not are movies hard to make but they are also expensive as fuck. More power to him if DiCaprio want to work with him. and if it makes it easier for him to make his film then so be it. I’m sure he’ll make another Kundun soon enough or another After Hours let the man play the system!

Dennis Brian

i thought the suggestion was he is selling out with shutter island which is a potboiler horror film if anything like the novel; this is of course premature and not my idea in the least tho I think the director hasn’t had a good fiction film in the last decade or so

L.A.™

Well it stars DiCaprio and is Cape Fear also a sell out since it is a remake that was passed on to him by Spielberg. So you did not like the departed should i dare ask why?

Law

What does the term “sell out” mean, Den? I belief that Scorsese is a grown cinephile who knows what he is doing so he can do whatever the hell he wants and I shall not malign him.

Dennis Brian

I didn’t find Damon convincing. It paled next to the original not that that should matter. Nicholson didn’t even try in my view. And it did not warrant its exterme length. Casino was the last one I loved from him

Glemaud

Law’s just scared that Scosese’s actually looking, and he’ll strike down anyone who dareth sully the good name of The ’Sese.

Dennis Brian

I dont know law I did not create this thread personally i would say it means the person stayed true to his instincts and did not make something he didn’t want to make for money

clovenhoof

I completely agree that Scorcese has took a nose dive!

I believe Bela Tarr is probably the best Director working today.

Pavel

I personally think this is a hollow reflection on one of the greatest filmmakers in “american cinema.” Not one person has really said why they dislike him in this thread, just that they don’t. And this is completely mindboggling. You can not, I repeat can not call The Departed a blockbuster sell out. Many people still don’t know who Scorsese is by name. If his films make money it’s because he directs for an audience that endures them.

And there is enough of an audience who like DiCaprio (who is a fine actor), or Mark Whalberg, or whatever, to go and see them in their next movie. Now I do think he needs to spread his wings and start giving lead roles to other male actors. But to think of him as a hack merely because he make money is shallow, and I’m sorry but a unoriginal attack…. I admire directors like Miranda July and Soderbergh also, but lets face it, some of you wish that they made more money so you could actually talk about them to your friends, who don’t know about them.

And personally if you have nothing to look forward to, you just have very narrow mided look at movies today. Granted there are films like Legion and Transformers that frusterate the hell out of us merely for their existence, but you know what? You can’t compare those films to The Departed simply cause they both make money. If you were a filmmaker that got noticed by Hollywood. I’m sure you’d take the chance, at least he is a talented artist, who can deliver a film that is not rich merely in its budget but with in it self as well.

scorsese one of our greatest filmmakers! (excluding 2 documentaries) he hasn’t made a great film in 15years

Pavel

I don’t think you have to admire every single Indie or underground filmmaker to be considered a serious cinephile. Some are good, but you know what? Some are crap. I just find this thread kind of pathetic.

Den, last great one…Casino? Agreed. I didn’t like The Departed one bit.

Realistically, there are many more directors who haven’t “gone Hollywood” than those who have.

And as for Scorsese, the motherfucker can do what he wants (with or without Hollywood.) He’s Martin fucking Scorsese.
