How does it compare to other Melville? This is his only film from his 1960s-70s period I have yet to see…
compares well, which is both good and bad. good in that its as good as his other crime thrillers, bad in that its almost indistinguishable, at least for me. melville basically made the same film at least 4 or 5 times.

I watched his film Le Deuxiemme Souffle last night and was blown away. What an incredible masterpiece of crime noir and mob cinema. Thrilling landscape and cinematography most certainly make what the Criterion Collection dubbed an incredible heist sequence. This is a very stark and haunting film, with Lino Ventura putting forth an masterful performance. This is a must-see film.
