^^^i thought you were going to ask why they dont’ start their own businesses instead of relying on others to provide employment(Greek bureaucracy would have even given Kafka nightmares!!).

Moving to another country is extremely difficult, as you know, and mostly a last resort.

Maybe ‘great’ wasn’t the right word.

It may be a last resort, but you have to choose economic freedom, and a brighter future for your children sometimes. I’ve worked with countless Hondurans, Mexicans, Jamaicans, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Puerto Ricans, in my hometown, who have made this same tough choice, and a hundred years ago my French and Spanish ancestors, as well as many Slavs made the same choice to immigrate to the place that I call home.

In the future, I would like to move my family to a place away from Hurricanes, for a more stable future.

Physical media is waste. It collects dust. I don’t want to “own” something I might only watch once. Even my favourite films I only watch a few times a year. That’s what I find appealing about streaming.

This is how most people want to watch movies in the 21st century. Even if it’s convenience at the expense of quality. Eventually bandwidth will increase and so will quality.

Hopefully in the future, distribution rights will be less of a problem (though I remain skeptical). If I want to watch Werkmaster Harmonies but can’t buy it because it’s not available in Australia, of course I’m going to download it. It’s fast and it works. I’d happily pay for it but I’m not even given a choice.

Wow Jason, you really need to read more. Your saying hilariously naive and ridiculous things, that you think the USA is so innocent and peace loving is just absurd, you do know you’re government has been responsible for the deaths of millions upon millions right (or are you a supporter of for example the ruthless bombings of Cambodia – which killed up to 2 million and defacto put the Khmer Rouge in power), that the CIA has overthrown some 30 odd regimes around the world for not being America’s political pawn, that you guys have trained more ‘terrorists’ than any al-queda ever has, that you have supported some of the most barbaric regimes in the world (Pinochet in Chile, Suharto in Indonesia, Saddam Hussein in Iraq etc) etc.

You really sound rather clueless, Dimitri is making the plain as day light fact that dvds cost too much, that if it were cheaper he’s buy it. It’s not all that complicated really, personally I don’t download films that often unless I am particularly desperate to see it mainly because I don’t like watch poor quality versions but for example most of Peter Greenaway’s cinema isn’t even out on dvd so films like The Baby of Macon and Drowning by Numbers I felt compelled to download (and loved them both). It’s fairly obvious that Film distribution on dvd is poor, only two Angelopolous films are out on dvd which are available to me and like Dimitri I am not paying in excess of £20 for one film so I can import it, I could buy 5 or 6 films with that. The simple fact is if more films were available and cheaper then piracy wouldn’t be such a large issue, I certainly prefer spending the money for decent quality films, but if a distributor is putting out slap-dash rubbish quality products then paying the distributor is the last think I want to do. Pretty simple if you ask me, make films cheaper and people will buy them, make films available and people will buy them, it’s not a radical demand and one even a reactionary like yourself shouldn’t really have a problem with. That your arrogantly think proposing people move country, as if you know them, as if you know best, as if it’s as simple as that, who asked you for such advise what makes you think that your advise is wanted it just makes you look really daft, it’s utterly absurd.

“Pretty simple if you ask me, make films cheaper and people will buy them”

Allan mate, they should make films avalable as well, we have plenty of starving cinephiles in Greece, in Bulgaria, in Turkey, everywhere around these regions, not all of my ctizens have been Americanized. Although Jason has a point about middle quality dvd transfers, why should the cinephiles of the un-privileged world be stuck with middle to low quality dvd transfers? I have enough of them as it stands, cheap quality books too.

Joks

^^DIm, are dvd transfers in Greece for smaller films still bad then? I know you guys don’t have companies as Criterion or Artificial Eye, or even Madman in Australia, but haven’t things at least improved somewhat over the years?

I know dvd’s in Greece were pretty expensive up until a few years ago. i remember seeing The Departed for like 35 Euros! the two disc edition, when it was new.

Allan

Dim, I did say make them available also look what I said on the first page – I think all culture should be free and accessible to all. I was just addressing the issue at Jason’s level. I personally would like to move to Greece, if we (the International Working Class) are going to have a Socialistic revolution, it’s going to happen there and I would love to be part of such a process.

“I know dvd’s in Greece were pretty expensive up until a few years ago. i remember seeing The Departed for like 35 Euros! the two disc edition, when it was new.”

Nah, it’s half the price now but personally, I would never buy a film like The Departed. Infernal Affairs with several extras maybe but definitely not films like Departed.

Oh Allan, no worries, i was just shouting out loud because when you mentioned Greenaway, I figured I check all the available Greenaway releases around and the only ones are the Tulse Luper Trilogy and his Rembrandt exercises….all those 4 in a dvd format package with nothing else, not even commentary.

See, it’s not just the film per se….it’s one thing if I want to buy a Terra em Transe (which I have) in a poor quality dvd because you can’t find it elsewhere and because your lucky that the only store that cares of these stuff didn’t pre-order it but had it brought along other imported dvd copies and it’s another to talk about advanced quality of films like Bunuel’s or De Sica’s etc.

Am I asking too much? Why the fuck do I need to be American or French or or or to easily acquire what I want? I want to be able to buy 3 fucking Criterions I want AND to be able to go and watch a concert all in the same week! I COULD have done all these but you see….the fucking products cost…and who gains from all this? Oh please all you democratic sheep tell me so.

Joks

Blu-rays are still pricey though? what would you say the average price for a new dvd is in Greece now? 18-20 Euros?

Dimitris Psachos

^ That’s about it but don’t forget…all the domestic ones are average quality AT BEST. Most of them (about 85%) are without extras too.

Blu-rays in most of the Balkans aren’t as successful as with Western and Northern Europe anyhow, so pricey or not, the public didn’t “buy” the hype.

Joks

^^Dim, also, final question, i read somewhere that dvd sales in Greece trail most other western countries anyway. years ago when i read the dvd charts in greece, most of the entries in the top were music dvd’s. I remember this guy in Greece told me once that the multiple viewing phenomenon wasn’t as prevalent in Greece as other countries, and that, at least for a while, explained the lower movies sales. Would you agree with that? This guy lived in America between 2001-2003 and he said that Greeks don’t watch movies overa nd over again, at least the older generations don’t.

Whole lot of first world problems going on in here. Complaining about not being able to go to the opera? Jesus, a fucking laugh. People are barely unable to keep their lights on and get one meal a day for a family and someone’s getting seriously aggravated that they won’t have extra money to go to fucking concerts in addition to buying movies? Fuck out of here.

Of course it’s all relative Allan. Dude’s complaining about not being able to do 15 other luxuries in addition to ‘movies being too expensive’. It’s laughable bullshit that shouldn’t be taken seriously on any level. It’s an issue of budgeting not things being too expensive.

Jesus you’re childish. Actually I do voluntueer at my younger cousin’s school when I can and I try to scrape together a few coins when I have them to either help established charities or people who may need a little to get on the bus. There has been no mention of being ‘superior’ either explicitly or implicitly.

No, a million people bombing parliament wouldn’t be revolution. It would be an act of terrorism. Revolution is getting the people educated so they can all successfully help themselves and each other so they no longer have to deal with exterior or interior forces that are oppressing them in whatever fashion. Often it takes violence, but revolutions do not begin with bombings, nor are they ever successful with solely bombings. Stop acting like a child.

You’re such a good fucking Samaritan now, are you not?

Sorry, I’ll take my 100 euros and spend them to artistic snobberies. I know people who make 10.000 euros a month, they can easily become charities instead of me. Please, fuck off and learn the fucking difference of abundance you governmental creep.

“No, a million people bombing parliament wouldn’t be revolution. It would be an act of terrorism.”

Really? Act of terrorism? You speak like my ignorant grandma.

“Revolution is getting the people educated so they can all successfully help themselves and each other so they no longer have to deal with exterior or interior forces that are oppressing them in whatever fashion.”

Revolution means to PERSUADE the “authorities” to OBEY THE OPEN-MINDED PUBLIC! I can give you more variations of revolution but YOUR revolution is “be a sheep, obey the rules”. So educative people will no longer have to deal with oppression? Name me one example that this has occurred.

“Often it takes violence”

Thanks for proving you’re a mindless fool.

“Stop acting like a child.”

Stop being a conservative weirdo.

…and fuck Jesus.

The RICH FUCKS can give their money, they have more than enough.

So we’re talking about fucking Socialism? Wake up, Jesus… GO, MARX, GO!

We’ve talking about this same theme in another internet forum, and — Jesus — suddleny this same Socialism-bullshit started. I think this is the only justification of who support the downloads? Jesus, no! And I download movies.

I’m conservative? Really? Serious question, do you have some sort of mental illness? Because you always, without fail, make an ass out of yourself whenever anyone contests anything you say. I’m almost positive English isn’t your first language so I’ll resist the temptation do give you any heavy lifting. Good day.

So you now know my entire political views? What do they happen to be Dimitris? Considering you have such keen insight into all of my beliefs. What do I do? How do I feed my ‘rotten state’? There was no need to put mock in quotation marks. It’s very apparent that I’m mocking. And you should have put quotation marks around the entire phrase ‘language barrier argument’ for better sarcastic affect.

Regardless, I said that because you obviously have no understanding of the nuances of the language. Or maybe you’re just really insane in believing that because some snippets of information that have said to mean one thing and one thing exclusively. Take for example your response to what I said about terrorism. You have no idea whether or not I believe it’s necessary, condone it, if I am unilaterally supportive of it, etc. however your first reaction was about how you feel anyone who is against feels about terrorism.

Add that to the second response where you called me a hypocrite because I said violence is often necessary. You clearly don’t have a great grasp of the English language. Or you’re head is so far up your own ass that you believe that just because someone doesn’t share the same exact beliefs as you then the must absolutely, positively, believe in the thing that you hate most about the subject.
