The Third Man is still in print i believe. At least in Blu Ray it is.
THE THIRD MAN is out of print in both formats. Criterion lost the rights to it but you can still pick up a copy. A few on that list are still available in the stores. STRAW DOGS went out of print years ago and I still see copies of it around.
Third Man is oop but it is available on the 10 Years of Rialto set.
Pygmalion you can find on the Essential Arthouse (the original Criterion didn’t have any special features)
But I’ve wanted Sid & Nancy, Tokyo Olympiad and the Killer but people are selling the three for way more than I would pay for it.
damn criterion used to own some awesome ip
:(
I just picked up a copy of the OOP Silence of the Lambs for only 20 dollars at a movie store. They had two copies which was very surprising so I took one of them.
I am very shocked to hear that The Third Man is OOP only a short time after its initial release. Does this mean that a copy of that will go up in value really fast just as the Salo original OOP edition is? If that’s the case I’m buying a DVD and Blu Ray edition right now and leaving them unopened!
I guess I should go to the store and get The Third Man on Blu. I already have the newer DVD, which is absolutely fantastic, but seeing that on Bluray would just be cool as hell.
Savvy
I would love to buy that Robocop DVD.
I wouldn’t think that the Third Man will see an increase in value like Salo, because it will likely be available for some time to come. More and more classics are coming out on blu-ray as well and it will likely get released again. If you don’t have it, I’d strongly recommend getting it though, because it is a great film and both the dvd and blu-ray versions were fantastic. I picked up a second copy of it to give away as a gift to the right person at the right time. An out of print Criterion is always a great gift.
you can still get the third man from Amazon!
I wish they still had Rebecca. :(
I agree that The Third Man will probably not see much of an increase in value, but I do feel grateful that I have the Blu-ray copy with both the digipack and the plastic replacement case. Go me! I wonder if the digipacks will ever become valuable collectors items…
How long has Contempt been out of print? I just bought a copy and B&N today.
I have Silence of the Lambs, Robocop, Contempt, The Third Man, This is Spinal Tap & Straw Dogs… I REALLY want The Killer & Hard Boiled.
I used to have “Hard Boiled” but a long long time ago I left it on a train. Oh well, at least I’ve still got “Ran” and “Contempt”. ;o
frankly, the dragon dynasty HB is so much better anyway I’m not too sad.
Contempt, Pierrot Le Fou, and Grande Illusion are all OOP but are still available from Amazon itself at the standard retail price
Does anybody have an updated version of this list they could share? I can’t find one anywhere.
now this may seem like a dumb question but curiosity has me on this one: does Wes Anderson have a deal with Criterion that all his dvd’s get a Criterion release?
i’ve seen all of his films on Criterion DVD format and in a regular distribution format.

I now own eight of these yay! Also Pierrot le Fou needs to be added to the list
i have the small back room, but it didn’t come with a booklet! fuckknuckles!
I’ve got 13 of the OOPs. 3 of which are still unopened. I need to find more time to watch my movies. I’m trying to find a good price on “Bob le Flambeur” and “Diary of a Country Priest.” But I want them ALL!!!!
Am I the only person on this sight who has an OOP criterion edition of The Killer??? I payed 60$ for it. I even like it better than the new dragon dynasty edition. They both don’t really have an special features, and the Criterion has a pretty good commentary by John Woo.
I have “The Killer” and “Hard Boiled” back when they were newly OOP for about $25 each. With the new Dragon Dynasty editions, my girlfriend keeps telling me to sell them but I don’t have the heart.
I’d sell Hard Boiled. The DD version is a hundred times better. But don’t sell The Killer. The DD version has pretty much no special features and for some reason it looks like it was shot with an HD camera. Also the sound quality is quite horrible IMO.
Criterion needs to bring back RoboCop, and include it in a Verhoeven sci-fi box set also consisting of Starship Troopers and Total Recall while they are at it.
Roger: Yes.
Thought I’d construct the list in a snazzy table format. The list makes me so fucking sad though.
Here is a question I want to ask media companies/those that own the intellectual property: It’s been well established that you guys want to make as much money as possible. It boggles the mind to think that you wouldn’t want as many revenue streams as possible. Release your own version of the film, that is fine…. but why not take the money that would come in from a Criterion release on top of that amount? Cultural product works better in environments of cooperation…. history has shown inasmuch. I mean, there are a good number of OOP Criterion titles that have no alternative at present. What is the point of the rights withdrawal then?

As of today, Criterion’s website lists 24 titles as out of print. There’s really no place (that I could find) that concisely lists all these titles. I had to scroll through Criterion’s pages to gather this info. I thought it might be helpful.
