Long music video or longest music video?

We would not have MTV today if it wasn’t for some cynical misanthrope making a 3 hour long music video of people dancing to Mozart in space.

Mozart? Um, what? You might want to google a movie’s score before making yourself look like an idiot. The score is taken from pieces by various composers and foremost among them is Bach, not Mozart. You sound dumb based on this post.

Hey guys, no need to fight. Can’t we all just get along?

No need to blame Kubrick. Afterall MTV’s aesthetics were influenced by Eisenstein’s editing techniques which were influenced by Abel Gance’s “La roue” that was influenced by D.W. Griffith. Blame him.

D. W. Griffith wouldn’t have even existed were it not for the Big Bang. Honestly, the Big Bang is the source of all humanities’ woes. Blame that.

I blame the universes that bumped up against one another and caused the Big Bang that formed our universe.

Universes are terrible shit-starters.

I was going to try and give some example of how cool MTV used to be compared to nowadays with an old school promo clip from the channel, but the first thing I found coincidentally (if only vaguely) corroborates the OP’s theory of a 2001 / MTV connection (not my intention):

Just realized you have to be over 45 to remember the real MTV

^ Nah, but over 35 is about right.

the actual beginnings:

here are some of the promos:

I believe MTV imploded around 1997… 35 sounds right.
Now kids get to watch Cribs.

Sure, at 31 I have only vague, fearful childhood memories of its chaotic, rapidly edited interstitial material…it’s “look”. But it sure seemed cool.

In September 1981 I visited a friend who had cable and he tuned into MTV. It looked weird, I asked him “What is that?”
He said “A channel that shows music videos, they take a song and turn it into short film.” I was confused
and amazed. Thought it would not last long. Guess it did not in the long run considering what they show today.

Matt, thanks…that is exactly the stuff I was hoping to find. Priceless.

I say blame it on the alcohol.

Ha, MTV was pretty influential for my teen years. It introduced me to a lot of great music that I otherwise would not have been exposed to. But I also remember it’s downfall with the introduction of raunchy game shows and reality based shows.

I didn’t even know they still existed (I haven’t had cable TV for about three years) until I saw them in the news today because of some show depicting teens in sex and drug related situations. I’ve never heard my niece, who is now seventeen, even mention MTV once in her life. I should ask her if she watches this channel but I doubt that she does.

Is MTV still relevant in any way even to the music industry? I can’t imagine that their ratings are very good but I’m a little out of touch with the demographic that they target and haven’t watched it in over a decade.

Anyone ever read the detailed theory(goes into techniques) of how Kubrick filmed the moon landings? No matter how far fetched, it’s still pretty interesting stuff.

EDIT: Found the link http://www.jayweidner.com/AlchemicalKubrickIIa.html

-Is MTV still relevant in any way even to the music industry?-

Certainly not in the way it was in the ‘80s and some of the’90s.

I remember when MTV2 used to play music videos, does that count?

Also, what are people blaming the current incarnation of MTV for? Are all of the reality shows influencing filmmaking? Is Michael Bay’s aesthetic the result of Jersey Shore?

Certainly not in the way it was in the ’80s and some of the ’90s.

I didn’t think so.

When I was a teen I had this bizarre, deviant crush on Martha Quinn. I still can’t talk about it.
