Sure, everything else by David Lynch, except “The Elephant Man.”
Minds fucked by the likes of JACOB’S LADDER, THE GAME and DARK CITY are too easily fucked.
how about The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie? or The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover?
True, Robert T.I.N., nearly anything by Bunuel or Greenaway will do.
Roscoe, seconded. That be some tame shit.
Im surprised El Topo isn’t on there….
Salo, the last 1.5 hours of Berlin Alexanderplatz, anything considered Surreal, nearly anything by Guy Maddin, Svankmajer…
Just off the top of my head:
EL TOPO
(oops, just noticed your post, Crap Monster)
KAFKA
THE TRIAL
THE ATTIC EXPECITIONS
And, judging by the “Huh?” reaction of so many in the audience: THE PRESTIGE
And then there are the movies that are not puzzling but still fuck with your mind, such as:
THE DEVILS
THE RULING CLASS
In addition to what’s been said, maybe 21 Grams, Werckmeister Harmonies, Gerry, Persona, Teorema…
Yeah, Gerry is fucking weird.
the amputee by david lynch
O LUCKY MAN probably belongs on the list, too.
Order- From Cremaster 3
Irreversible
Bunny Lake is Missing
Pink Flamingos
Honeymoon Killers
Cannibal Holocaust
The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover
Holy Mountain
SANTA SANGRE – Jodorovsky
SECONDS – John Frankenheimer
THE TENANT – Polanski
IN A GLASS CAGE – Agusti Villaronga
@Noel Danseco
Seconds has to be one of my favorite films of all time.
@MG – Hell yeah, man! Bizarre, underrated and overlooked.
Yeah, Seconds. Probably one of the more depressing films I have ever seen. Ever. It is really well done sci-fi too.
Missing Last Year at Marienbad.
Another nod for Seconds. I accidentally caught it in the early 90s while watching a cable channel and I thought it showcases the 60s-style paranoia than something like The Manchurian Candidate.
Also:
Persona
Cache
Funny Games
Close up (Kiarostami)
Total Recall
Pretty much any Haneke, Oldboy and The Sacrifice. Oh, and Don’t Look Now and The Shining. And Naked Lunch. He really could have extended this list to 100 it seems.
Cronenbergs’s Spider and Crash.
Elements of Crime – One of Lars von Trier’s best, if not the best, and often overlooked film.
I am so happy that CUBE is on that list.
THE FALLEN
USUAL SUSPECTS
CACHE
INSOMNIA
COME & SEE
FANTASTIC PLANET
For me, it’s Bambi.
Something about Thumper just creeps me out. (No doubt, the hidden influence behind Donnie Darko.)
But seriously, I’d say that while I wouldn’t call Lattuada’s Mafioso a blatant mind fuck, it does do a masterful trick of ending as a different movie than it starts out to be. More subtle in its shift, but deeply effective nonetheless. In the closing shot, were brought back to the same exact world we entered in the begining—but nothing beneath the surface can feel the same again. Also it predates most of the other movies listed by a considerable amount of years.
This is a bit off but I feel kinda relates to it.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is a total mindfuck. I guess End of Evangelion can count as a film. It’s a great series and all, but fuck it at the same time. I think there was some literal mindfucking in one episode. But Evangelion totally tricks you, it starts off as like a happy go luck mecha anime, but it takes a fuckin’ left turn in the middle of the series, where you find out everyone in that show just has problems. Both endings pissed me the fuck off, I don’t know which ending I like more, or correction pissed me off less: That everything that happend near the end never real and just a fuckin’ test or we ALL fuckin’ DIE. Supposedly the new ending for the re-fuck films is gonna be the true ending, but I feel it’s also gonna piss me off.
Again, sorry, I kinda went off… but it’s also always fun for me to vent my fustration with the series.
“Funky Forest” is a mindfuck. It is boring, but full of laconic, ineffective, slow mindfuckery.
dbl post (got too excited).
Gabe
Thought this was a pretty good list. What do you guys think? Significant omissions?
