MOMENT OF TRUTH: HAVE YOU EVER GONE TO THE MOVIES AND FALLEN ASLEEP DURING THE FILM?

my worst offense (though, i’m sure alot of people will forgive me for it)…

Eddie Murphy’s “Dr. Doolittle”

i just knodded off during the opening credits…then, the next thing i know…i’m being awakened by the ushers…

MOST RECENT OFFENSE:

“Quantum of Solace” during the boat chase…and a couple of times afterwards…

At the theatre I’ve fallen asleep during Pirates of the Caribbean 2. I often fall asleep while watching a movie at home.

I feel asleep in the theater during Titanic— but I believe that it was my brain enacting a kind of mercy kill, protecting me from exposure to the Winslet/DiCaprio virus.

i went to see a double bill of elephant and dogville, the night after a full day of university, which in turn was the day after i stayed up all night watching the oscars (in the UK), and yes, i admit to drifting occasionally throughout dogville.

what may be worse is the fact that i fell asleep, several times, during a sigur ros gig a few years back. i was sat on the second row too so im pretty sure the band were aware of my rudeness. it was so relaxing tho, if anything my comfort should be seen as a compliment.

I fell asleep during the first Harry Potter. I am forever indebted to myself for it.

i wish i could have fell asleep when i saw GREASE for the first and last time, when it was re-released in theater’s several years back. i think the excruciating pain was what kept me awake.

T

Adam, ah come on, nobody stays awake during a Sigur Ross gig unless they are on some kind of heavy amphetamine…in which case they are probably down the road in a mosh pit. SR’s just too much soporific wash of ethereal undertow for a human with healthy brain activity.

And yeah Ryan, I actually fell asleep reading the first page of Harry Potter (1). My eyes rolled back into my skull and I began to froth. It induced an epilepsy of ennui.

I have only fallen asleep in three films. Black Mask(tsui hark , jet li waht were you thinking), Blast from the past(shame on you walken and spacek), and Troy(i should’ve seen it coming when i saw the preview).

T

Yeah Lu, no quarter given on Troy. that was a sleep warning given in huge red flashing neon letters.

I fell asleep during the Empire State building scene in Peter Jackson’s King Kong. It was late at night, I was getting bored and it was the second film I saw that night. The first was Syriana.

mega facepalm @ falling asleep during sigur ros

double facepalm @ against mr boo’s opinion of sigur ros

fell asleep during the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, but i was at a friends. his couch was so comfortable!

adam

i can understand how you would fall asleep during the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, its so lucid and dreamlike, in a similiar manner to the feeling i get during terrence malick’s work.

as a man who never sleeps (its past 3am and im still on here…) sigur ros drifting me away to the land of nod was a huge compliment to the way they relax this stresshead.

Dick Tracy, 1990. I have no idea why I remember this. In fact, the only thing I remember about the film is the first 10 minutes and the ending credits.

Yes, but they were because the movies were so soothing

Synechdoche, NY. First viewing (I went back to see it again). I had a cold and finally dragged myself out of the house to “do something” and save a miserable day. But y’know what, there was something about dozing off a time or two that weirdlly compounded and extended the movie. Somehow it felt even more lived in, which submerged me in it that much deeper. Synecdoche is the second movie, in my life, where I felt, leaving the theatre, that for a while I was still inside the world of the film. The first being Eraserhead (midnight showing, college years … wowser.)

Twice: Cool World (horrid Brad PItt and Kim Basinger semi-animated movie from the 90’s) and Pearl Harbor. I actually stretched out in the seats next to me and rested my head on my girlfriend’s lap during Mr. Bay’s masterwork.

Not really. I mean why go to a theater to fall asleep? I don’t usually fall asleep in strange places.
At home though, when I’m in the middle of one of Godard’s films (post-sixties)? Oh yeah, I’ll pause the film and I’ll be able to take the greatest nap ever.

Monsieur Layshock, don’t get me wrong— I like Sigur Ross, in the past moreso than now, but that’s because I needed more lullaby sleep back then. and the whole “sing in your own invented language” thing is a beautiful idea, and it works perfectly. but to describe them as anything less than elfin and ethereal would be crazy, surely. unless they’ve changed recently, and gone hardcore.

Cause the movie sucks:) That’s why you pass out:)

Joshua W

I’m actually sad about this, but I fell asleep about half way through There Will Be Blood the second time around. However, I’d been up for 48 hours, so cut me some slack.

“Waltz With Bashir”, I worked nights and shifts, so it caught up with me. Great film otherwise, including a bizzare squence of animated German 80s hardcore porn with a plumber and a frisky housewife. “Quantum of Solace” was pretty boring too- had to keep my eyes open like Alex in “A Clockwork Orange” to function with that.

Justin Martin

I fell asleep for a couple stretches during The DaVinci Code, and afterward didn’t feel all that bad about it. I also fell asleep during the movie Copland, a mildly acclaimed Sylvester Stallone movie from the late ’90s. I also fell asleep during ET twice, once at the drive-in and once at the theater, but I was four and it was probably past my bedtime anyway. What the hell were my parents thinking?!?

Nope, never. I have this horrible habit of staying awake during bad movies.

Nathan W

Never, but almost during Cremaster 3. Two of the people I was with did.

I fell asleep seeing “Armageddon.” I awoke just as Ben Afleck broke into a rendition of “Leaving on a Jet Plane,” and I just walked out. Looking back, I feel like that movie signaled the coming of the Bush era. Awful!

Andre

NEVER, although came really close to it in big mammas house 2 (while baby sitting, not my choice) for obvious reasons
