Most Disturbing Film Ever (strictly speaking)

Tristan P. Teshigahara

I would have to say Salo, or The 120 Days of Sodom. Audition really caught me by surprise and made cringe several times as well as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Some may say Ichi the Killer, some may say Mondo Cane or Cannibal Holocaust and others might say Irreversible. Visitor Q, also left me a bit inert. What do you guys say>?

Martyrs, seconded, since it is so tediously graphic and unrelenting.

Ive translated Salo from italian to spanish for the university that i was working on in Spain. I know that film shot by shot and it’s by far the most repulsive film ive ever seen…

I would include Kim Ki-duk´s “Adress Unknown” which is a dark and disturbing depiction of the horrors caused by the Korean civil war. A recent example of a highly disturbing film is Chuan Lu´s “City of Life and Death” with centers around the rape of Nanking during the Japanese occupation of China.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers – Not only do humans undergo a complete loss of personal identity, but they’re fully aware of the loss AND they don’t care.

Why did you find The Elephant Man disturbing? I found it depressing but far from being disturbing.

Groovy Monster

THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972) messed me up pretty good many years ago. Oh, and all those FACES OF DEATH type films (which I refuse to go anywhere near anymore).

Haven’t seen any of the current crop of well known “disturbing” films (not even the SAWs or HOSTELs). Just not a fan of the mindless torture/gross-out flicks. I don’t mind gore at all, just not into the whole human-torture-in-excruciating-detail stuff, so I don’t see any of those.

I’m pretty sure Salo (120 days of Sodom) is hands down the most disturbing film. I’ve only seen a few clips, but I was definitely disturbed by a friend’s retelling of the plot, who then advised me never to see the film.

@MIKEL

Wow, I’m not sure if I should be impressed or frightened by that. Are you better because of it?

@Sandwiches, I think if you read the book first, entire time while you are watching Salo, the film, you’ll just feel numb and dumbfounded at the same time – personally, I found it dull although cinematography was quite beautiful.
If you are interested in sadomasochism, you should read it because entire book is a repetition of ways on how to abuse people the most devastatingly as possible. It’s the most banal book I’ve ever read, and by the time you finish about first 30 pages or so, you just won’t find anything so shocking anymore.

I’ve just seen Salo, and I don’t know if it is the most disturbing film ever, but it’s the most disturbing film I’ve seen so far. I found it a bit dull too, Miss J, but never the less disturbing. Now I will put on a Woody Allen film and try to get some of those images from Salo out of my head….

I’m with Cookie on Pink Flamingos, disturbing is not the right word, rather Mischievous and hilarious.

“Irreversible” is fantastic, again didn’t disturb me though, Thought “I Spit on Your Grave” was boring to be honest.

Last film that disturbed me was “Sex, Blood and Mutilation” by the late and great Joe Christ (RIP). Also while not very graphic I found Jack Ketchum’s “The Girl Next Door” pretty disturbing. All I can think of atm.
